COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Schlenkerla Smokebeer Wheat is an ale with light smoky aroma. As Bavarian wheat beers, it is being brewed with a mixture of both barley malt and wheat malt. The portion of barley malt is hereby a classic Schlenkerla smokemalt, while the wheat malt remains unsmoked. Served unfiltered with its natural haziness, Schlenkerla Wheat reaches its full aroma through bottle fermentation with fine top fermenting yeast.

500ml bottle. Pours a hazy red-brown with a sizeable head that seems to last forever. Some faint herb notes mingle with strong smoked bacon and Lapsang Souchong tea on the nose. It is smooth and sweet to begin, with a hint of banana coming in, before being replaced by a potent mix of spicy bitterness and slightly harsh smoke. There is a hint of the typical sweet weizen finish, but made a bit less sweet and a bit more complex by the strong smoke. The aftertaste is an unusual mix of weizen banana and smoke. Interesting, and quite good.

500 mL bottle from Total Wine, Chesapeake, VA. Pours light brown with a huge frothy off-white head. Aroma of smoke and peat. As overwhelmingly smoky as the aroma seems, the taste offers plenty more than just smoke. Wheat and barley are still prevalent. The end result is a very drinkable, yet still very smoky flavored beer. Awesome.

500 ml bottle
Dark orange to brown murky beer with visible yeast particles. Blonde head. Aroma has smoked wood and ham with lemon, banana, vanilla and clove. Flavor has tar, licorice, yeast and bitterness. Palate is thinner than medium with high carbonation. Finish has quite strong bitterness. Afertaste has smoke, tar and citrusy bitterness. Interesting combination of a refreshing weizen and a smoky rauchbier. Not sure if it works or not.

Pours a hazy medium amber from the yeast. Exceptional massive head, lacing and retention. An almost perfect nose of meaty bacon like smoke balanced against a fruit like sweetness with a slight spicy note. The smoke aroma is not as intense as their Marzen and Urbock variants and is expertly balanced with sweetness. Light medium body that is somewhat slick in texture, but also has a grainy wheat aspect as well. Normal carbonation with a bit of effervescence in the finish and middle. The outstanding flavor profile is not as intense as their other variants. It is more balanced with malt sweetness and a bit more complex. The delicious smoke character is always present, but never overpowering. It begins with a moderate campfire bacon like smoke over a sweet background that has both biscuit and caramel characteristics. The middle allows the hops to impart a rather low level bitterness that has a clove like note as it effervesces and a banana quality as it fades. The finish is dryer than the others, somewhat crisp, sweeter and leaves you with a touch of clove and a lingering smokiness as if you’ve sitting around a campfire. Outstanding and an excellent introduction into the Rauchbier style that is not quite as intense as their Marzen and Urbock variants.

A delicious smoked weizen. Not quite as intensely smoky as their other offerings, but it’s a nice version. This is the ideal barbecue beer.

Some beers are acquired taste and I find this one is up there. Aromas of smoke, smoke and more smoke. A bit too much and can’t see myself trying it again.
