3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Draft @ When Pigs Fly. August 14, 2012. Poured deep black with near no head at all into a chalice. Aroma of coffee, dark fruits and some chocolate. The flavor is complex with layers of roasted malt. Semi-sweet chocolate, followed by licorice. The finish has a light hint of smoke. Toward the backside there is a faintest bit of a hop note to edge off the sweetness. Notes of deep, burnt coffee. The carbonation seems real soft. I wouldn’t call the body thin but, it isn’t full or even medium by any means. This is a sipper for sure, although I can’t directly pick up any alcohol. It went great with my meal and was a very tasty treat.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle thnx to Palme! Pours a jet black with a small, tanned, creamy head. Aroma of caramel, roasted malts, chocolate and some sweet vanilla. Flavour is sweet, with nutty and earthy tones as well. Some caramel tones present and a really, velvet like, smooth mouthfeel. Some alcoholic sweetness as well, but this was amazing.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
500mL thanks to my Norwegian Secret Santa! Deep, clear mahogany pour. Thick, dense yellow foam. Webby, thick lace. Nose is more complex than the Jack Daniels BA version, Lynchburg. Dark chocolate/semisweet chocolate, brunes, black cherries, thick fudge. Bourbon comes through the nose even in this version- just more nuanced. Big vanillin, white cake, and coconut. Taste is mega dense, chewy fudge, mild citrus hoppy balance, lemon and lime zest, grapefruit. Palate is super dense, hoppy balanced. No iota of sugar or cloying. Oh yeah. This is some world class stuff. Mind blowing.

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours all black with a brown lacing. Aroma of smoke, vanilla, coffee and chocolate. Amazinligy good balance. Full bodied, with a nice moutfeel. The high alcohol is well hidden in the mouth, but gives a nice, warm feeling in the chest. To summarize it’s a really, really good ale, complex taste that’s well balanced, all you need from an imperial porter.
