4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 villy83 (262) - Sausalito, California, USA - JAN 24, 2011
33 cl bottle from a local supermarket. It pours a ruby/brown liquid with amber tones, with a very foamy and consistent tan head (it looks delicious!). It smells very hoppy and malty: resin and herbs everywhere, with nice roasted malt, yeast and dark fruit; there’s also a hint of vanilla. In the mouth, there’s an explosion of herbal hops, with the sweetness of the malt always present. It tastes very much like it smells, but more hoppy. It leaves a very pleasant aftertaste of malt, vanilla and herbs. It feels oily and a little above the average on carbonation; medium to full bodied. It ends dry. I guess you could call this an excellent dubbel. It is difficult to ask for more. Alcohol is very nicely blended. Nice presentation; you know it’s an abbey beer from a distance.
4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 Spelt (206) - East Kingston, New Hampshire, USA - JAN 21, 2011
Tremendous aroma that brings to mind a warm slice of cinnamon apple pie. Also some caramel and vanilla accents play in this. Just plain fun to smell. Pours a dark, murky, orange/brown with a this but tight light tan head. Sweet and tart on sipping. Very nice balance between the two. Very slight mustiness comes in and a distinct spicy hop flavor in the finish. Briskly carbonated. Finishes dry. A very well crafted beer.

Bottled. From Tesco I think. Good aroma but weaker than Rocherfort or Augustijn. Taste still very good. Cheaper alternative of Rochefort.
3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 tronraner (2430) - Walland, Tennessee, USA - JAN 2, 2011
750 mL bottle. Pours a deep orange brown with big, fluffy beige head. The aroma is tart black currant, a little bit of raisin, some spice, a little bit of wood, and a slightly sweet note of bread. The flavor is slight tart fruitiness along with some raisin and caramel sweetness. As it gets toward the finish there is a weird burnt sugar taste (not caramelized--fully burnt). Then comes some wood and a light hint of onion. Kind of odd.

Classic dubbel. Lots of dark fruit to it, a bit of spiciness. Dryish finish. Tasty.
