3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Murky dark ruby color with a generous creamy beige head. The aroma was full of alcohol, wet tree bark, dark fruit, caramel, slightly sour, and very sweet malt. The flavor was similar to the aroma with more of an earthy character...slightly musty aftertaste. Bubbly feel with a long wet finish. Very satisfying.

Tastes similar to westmalle dubbel without such complexity. The head on this thing is quite amazing though. Great brew.

Bottled. Murky crimson colour with a larger beige crown. Unusual aroma in that it smelt like strewberried lead, pine shavings and strewberries. I sound like SilkT but this time its true. Tart start, astringent middle fruity finish.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: DEC 31, 2003 33 cL bottle, goblet. Gigantic fizzy head is tan and somewhat lasting. Murky brown body has huge yeast particles. Caramel, nutty, toasted grain malts. Flowery hops play second fiddle. Yeast aroma is of cobwebs. Vanilla, alcohol, toffee aromas with a light hint of spice. Moderately sweet throughout, with light bitterness at the end. Some dark chocolate notes appear in the aftertaste, which is fairly long in duration. Medium-full body is creamy with fizzy carbonation. Flavor does not contain as many sharp notes as the aroma. The bottom line is: this is a rich and nutty double that's pleasant to the end.
Rerate: 12/30/03 This is every bit as good as I remembered though tasted quite different, if that makes sense. I got a lot more dark fruits this time around (plum, raisin, and especially currants). Still excellent though. I don't know why the bottle instructs you to serve at 44-48 degrees F. Really has a sharp alcohol nose around that temp. The game really starts at 55-60 F.

Dark beer with a light head, and a slight coffee aroma. Lightly roasted flavour with a hint of bitterness (the beer reminds me of a stout). A good quality Belgian beer.

3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Brown in colour and sweet in aroma (caramel). Average sized, mostly lasting beige head. Sweet and warm taste, and a slightly bitter finish. Medium body. Not bad, but doesn't show much character.

Salty, wooden, funky aroma
Cloudy orange brown, offwhite golden lace
Dry wooden base, a bit orangepeel, fennel. Aroma is nice,
Feels a little bit unbalanced on the palate

Fruity (banana) arom with some raisins and sugar. Murky brown, creamy head, but retention not too good.
Fruity cobbwebs in the taste, otherwise pretty bland. Lightbodied and relatively highly carbonized.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Pours a nice dark brown/red color with a light, off-white head. The aroma is quite pleasant and sweet. Ripe grape, apple, chocolate, caramel, candi sugar and yeast. The flavor is not quite as nice or pleasant, but still satisfying. Still slightly sweet and fruity, with a nice does of chocolate and caramel. Slightly sharp on the tongue. Good, but nothing outstanding.
