A reddish-brown abbey ale brewed with dark malts. The secondary fermentation gives a fruity aroma and a unique spicy character with a distinctive aftertaste. Secondary fermentation in the bottle. (Serving temperature: 8-10ºC)

UPDATED: APR 15, 2013 Original rating: 5/3/03. Nice and dark color with little head. Smooth going down, similar to other dubbels but never a bad choice to drink.

Rerate 4/11/06. Almost two years has past and I have learned more about beer. While this is a fine brew it lacks the taste and palate for a Belgian of this style. 7/4/6/3/14

Rerate: 4/16/13. Wow, I cannot believe that it has been almost 10 years since I first rated this beer. This was the 9th beer I ever rated. Even wackier is that it has been 7 years since I rerated this, probably one of the first beers I rerated. So, this particular bottle has some weird code on it, 10 173 14, no idea what it means. This was one of my first gateway beers. Fortunately, its still pretty damn good. Eh, I wouldn’t say too fresh or too old. Picked it up on clearance for $3.99, can’t pass up such a deal. Strong plum candi sugar, thick sweet black bread and heavy yeastiness. Slight rye character. Flavor is similarly bready and sweet but not as much as the aroma makes you think. Everlasting head on a dark brown body. Nicely felt body but not heavy, evaporates nicely off the palate. Solid beer. 8/4/8/4/16

A nice looking dubbel, with medium reddish brown color and a good off white head. Nose is lightly sweet and a little fruit and spice as well. Also a nice sweet note in the start of the flavor, though also an apparent alcohol note and a light sourness. A good flavor, though it doesn't last quite long enough on the tongue. Good, nevertheless!

750ml bottle. The beer pours a cloudy brown color with a hint of red in it. Large light tan head that lingers for awhile. Aroma is filled with candy sweetness, raisins and a slight hint of alcohol. Taste is very silky, with caramel and much malt sweetness. Medium to full bodied, and well balanced. Complex taste, almost wine-like. This is an exceptional dubbel.

OK, this Abbey Dubbel is something really special. An excellent head on top of the brownish/readish body. A superb beer.

UPDATED: DEC 16, 2003 This is an excellent Abbey Dubbel and may even my best yet. Aroma is chocolate and caramel. Appearance looks about like every other Dubbel Ive had, brownish/red. Flavor is chocolate, caramel, apples, oranges, and berries complex for this style! The balance is perfect as the malt does not dominate. Palate is smooth with no evidence of the 7%. This is a top 10 beer for me!

UPDATED: FEB 8, 2008 (2/8/08, 750ml bottle, cork dated 10/07) Enormous rocky beige head atop hazy, deep amber body. Aroma is medium sweet, raisin, caramel, anise, some bread, orange, light alcohol. Taste is moderately sweet, raisin/plum, cola, some anise, yeast, light alcohol. Medium body, fairly smooth with some effervescence. (7/3/6/4/13) I can’t remember with certainty the beer I enjoyed so much nearly five years ago, but the clarity alone suggests that the two samples were very different.

(5/7/03) Opaque chestnut body with small tan head. Aroma and taste are wonderfully complex, and one and the same, strong and varied -- raisin, caramel, cherry, anise, orange, chocolate and slight alcohol. The combinations vary by sip and how far you are in the bottle. Nice full body, and the level of carbonation complements the flavors well. (8/4/9/5/18)

Murky brown and a big tan head that disappears quickly. Fruit flavors a little pepper and oak. Very carbonated. Kind of blah.

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2003 This brew poured a light brown head of fine and medium sized bubbles that left a good lacing. It has a cloudy dark brown body and a strong raspberry aroma. It also has a strong raspberry taste and an acidic finish. Overall, this brew is just averagely impressive. I was more impressed by the unique packaging. I think it has been the only brew I have drank that was wrapped in a paper package and had a wire tied cork on the bottle.

Amber color with a big lasting tan head! Complex malt flavour, almost wine like. By far the best Heineken i have tasted ;-)

02/01 Bottle: Pours a nice, dark ruby red color with a big, off-white lingering head. The aroma is strongly minty from the hops and mildly alcoholic. The palate is smooth, with a slightly thin body and medium carbonation. The flavor is mildly malty with a good, tangy/minty hop finish with notes of fruit and yeast. A decent Dubbel.
