Affligem’s hoppy Christmas ale, usually regarded as the best in the series. This rating is from old tasting notes (eleven years ago) and I have yet to re-rate this beer in its current form, as I have a suspicion it has undergone some changes (for the worse) recently, like its Blond and Dubbel nephews. Pours a hazy peach blonde under a thick and moussy, off-white head; fruity aroma, grassy and somewhat peppery hops, yeasty profile, orange, peach and banana, malt sweetish with soft mouthfeel evolving into a crisp and long, dry hop bitterness, though not as much as in the current ’Belgian IPAs’ we see arising everywhere; some vague solvents as well. Yet well-balanced and definitely one of the more interesting products among mass-marketed Belgian abbey beers.

Gusler (2653) - Tucson, Arizona, USA - MAR 3, 2003
The beer pours a translucent golden amber color, the head purposeful in size, the color off white and the residual lace a fine cover upon the glass. Mostly malt in the nose, lightly astringent, crisp and clean with the start slightly sweet, lots of malt, the top skinny in feel. Finish is biting in its acidity, the hops perky in their spicy bite, dry lingering aftertaste, drinkable, but not great.

Lovely dark gold color. Yeasty undertones amidst a medium pale malt body. Some mustard seed and a clear hop end that I appreciated - leaves a sharp biting bitter like orange peel, dryish too. Quite good

Straw colored pour, a little dark straw. Big, frothy, white head that lasts for a bit. As it slowly sinks it leaves behind a bunch of lacing. Huge peppery hop aroma with some nice yeast smells. Sweet malt aroma at that. Bitter bite on the tongue up front. Mostly from the carbon dioxide, and not the hops unfortunately. There is a hop presence in the mouth though. Mix that with some sweet malt and a nice earthy yeast and it isn’t half bad. Dry, bitterness on the back. Decent.
