Pours a hazy, pale, amber with a big, creamy, off-white head. Aroma is nicely yeasty, good spicines and wheaty malts. Fine, balanced mouthfeel - just the rigth amount of carbonation. Flavour is lightly metallic, good yeast, quite sweet and very thick malty. Finish is nice and hoppy.

6/12/2011 33cl bottle @ home - BB: 27/9/13 (2011-695)

Clear orange beer, big white head, unstable, non adhesive. Aroma: sweet malts, candi sugar, hops (little citric), some spices (orange peel?). MF: lots of carbon, medium body. Taste: carbon sour first, bitter hops, quite a lot of citrus fruits, general fruitiness, some grains/malts. Aftertaste: more citric hops turning to a pleasant bitter finish.

33cl Bottle from ABS Drinks Winksele. Clear golden colour, white head. Aroma of fruity esters, phenols, grassy hops, light malty. Flavour is medium sweet, fruity, just light floral, firm bitterness underneath, nice hoppy herbal/grassy finish with some phenols, just a touch spicy. Light to medium-bodied, firm but not disturbing carbonation. Decent stuff.

Affligem’s hoppy Christmas ale, usually regarded as the best in the series. This rating is from old tasting notes (eleven years ago) and I have yet to re-rate this beer in its current form, as I have a suspicion it has undergone some changes (for the worse) recently, like its Blond and Dubbel nephews. Pours a hazy peach blonde under a thick and moussy, off-white head; fruity aroma, grassy and somewhat peppery hops, yeasty profile, orange, peach and banana, malt sweetish with soft mouthfeel evolving into a crisp and long, dry hop bitterness, though not as much as in the current ’Belgian IPAs’ we see arising everywhere; some vague solvents as well. Yet well-balanced and definitely one of the more interesting products among mass-marketed Belgian abbey beers.

bonkiedeaap (307) - Leerdam, NETHERLANDS - DEC 12, 2014
Bottle from de Bierschuur in Poppel. The beer has a golden color and a nice large white head, with a lot of bubbles. In the aroma tones of flowers, dry fruits and a hint of hops. The taste is malty and a little sweetness in the background is noticable. The body is medium to light and is a little watery. Further the taste is a little chemical. The finish is short, dry and refreshing. One to forget soon. Shame, cause the other affligem beers are excellent.
