Not your typical "Jelly of the Month Club" beer. Dark roasted malt and bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavor and aroma burst from this pitch black milk stout. The full body and sweetness are derived from the addition of lactose (aka milk sugar) which is not fermentable by beer yeast. A healthy dose of English Kent Goldings hops provides a counterpoint to this aleís rich and complex maltiness.

Draft to taster. Looks good; a translucent dark cherry cola with foamy plight beige head that slowly dissipates into lacing. Smells of dark malt, dark chocolate, coffee, and roast. Tastes like it smells with a nicest sweetness and a nice, smooth mouthfeel. Good beer.

Poured from a bottle at home. Pours a dark color with a caramel head. Smell of roasted malt, cocoa and coffee flavor. Aroma is the same...coffee, cocoa with some sweetness. Taste is the same, with a lot of sweetness in the end of it. Really good milk stout.

On tap at Crowbar. Dark brown colour. Roasted malts aroma, hints of chocolate. Well-balanced chocolate sweetness, a bit salty, roasted caramel. Oaty milkiness. Not exactly a milk stout, but very enjoyable.

No head, just some bubbles. Aroma is slightly sweet, caramel, dark sugar, dark malts, licorice, lactose, grass, coffee, butterscotch. Taste is slightly sweet, dark malts, dark sugar, sweet licorice, grass, caramel, lactose, coffee, hints of cardboard. Little bitterness, slightly watery mouthfeel. Kind of boring.

22oz bottle, from Party Town. Shared with caterwaul and co. Labeled 7%. Brewed and bottled at ATG, West Minister, Maryland.. Very odd. Thanks to Caterwaul for pointing that detail out. Awesome label. Black color. Good thin half-finger of light brown head. Awesome cocoa nibs, vanilla, light roast in the aroma. Good earthy hop, hint of pine. Some noticeable lactose. Moderate to bigger sweet taste, good light to moderate bitterness. Awesome texture... Good chewiness, a bigger, thicker body, despite the medium to bigger feel. Slightly dry in the finish. At the end, though, still a milk stout, which isnít my favorite type of thing. This is a very well done example of the style, with an awesome texture to it, but itís still a little sweet for me. Go figure, I donít like sweet stouts being too sweet. I guess itís a relationship that will never work. My sample was very enjoyable, though. I feel as though I would LOVE it, if I was a fan of sweet stouts. WOW, awesome to enjoy with my sandwich, though. The savory character of my signature sandwich is a perfect pairing with the bigger sweetness of the style. I guess how thatís I should enjoy sweet stouts. With sandwich...
