COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Not your typical "Jelly of the Month Club" beer. Dark roasted malt and bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavor and aroma burst from this pitch black milk stout. The full body and sweetness are derived from the addition of lactose (aka milk sugar) which is not fermentable by beer yeast. A healthy dose of English Kent Goldings hops provides a counterpoint to this aleís rich and complex maltiness.

On tap @ Patricks. Black body with a small sized but lacing beige head, it actually looks really nice. Aroma of dark malt, chocolate and a hint of liquorice. Flavor is sweet, dark malt, chocolate, dry fruit and moderate bitterness. Fine body and smooth aftertaste. All in all nothing outstanding in aroma or flavor, but pretty solid and pleasant.

Bomber from Whole Foods PM. Thick and turbid black pour with 1-finger lacy head that says to me, "Get your damned ear out of my lacy head, and pick Eddie Lacy for your fantasy draft." Whatever. Nose is black patent malt, hops, cacao. Tastes black maltym somewhat hoppy, with a lighter palate than expected, and pretty good balance. Some creaminess in the finish.

On tap at Crowbar, march 22nd 2014. Dark brown body with a beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, chocolate, vanilla. Taste of chocolate, caramel and vanilla, lots of sweetness here, sweet and roasty finish. A good beer, though a bit onedimensional.

Bottle (brewed in Westminster, MD, presumably by Pub Dog). Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly diminishing. Body is black (almost opaque, flashlight tested). Aroma is moderately malty (chocolate milk, roasted grain, cocoa), with notes of vanilla and chalk. Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium to full body, creamy/syrupy texture, lively/soft carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic. Pretty plain and simple...not much in the nose besides the usual porter/stout aromas (albeit more chocolate milk odor than most). Quite sweet, as expected...the finish is just barely balanced enough to be drinkable. What Iíd love to know is why the brewery feels such a plain, simple beer is worth a ridiculous $16 per bomber...which I didnít realize until I got home due to the store not having put out price tags yet when I grabbed one. One of the most overpriced beers Iíve had in a long time, at least relative to quality level. Never again...the poor showing of this and Brettish Bulldog combined with the hubristic price tags makes it a no-brainer to put this in the "brewery to scroll past" list.

22o bottle pour darkish brown black with light edges and 2 finger head. Nose is creamy roast cocoa, nuts, milk, coffee, vanilla, almond. Taste is similar with pretty good soft mouthfeel, touches of sweet vanilla creamer, light nutty cocoa. Finish is light nutty cocoa, cream. Average.

Bottle, shared by me... in my dining room... just now.
Pours basically black with a medium sized tan head and plenty of lacing on the glass.

The aroma is rich, earthy, roasty. Itís only lightly sweet smelling and has a nice little hoppy leafiness. It becomes more chocolate forward as it opens up for sure.

The flavor is certainly dark-roast-malt forward, but thatís decently balanced with some chocolate, coffee, leafy hops, and a pretty nice level of sweetness. It tips the bitterness scale a touch, but again that sweetness and some of the malt complexity does a decent job of keeping that balanced and in check.

On tap at Patricks. It pours a hazy dark brown body under a finger thick beige head. The aroma is roasted, with a light sourish touch. Caramel, nuts, dried fruits and some chocolate in the aroma. Itís semi sweet on the palate, full bodied and with a nice carbonation level. Caramel, roasted malts, dried fruits and some chocolate in the flavor. A decent bitterness kicking in towards the finish. Expected a bit more from this, but itís a fine beer anyway. 140823
