COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Not your typical "Jelly of the Month Club" beer. Dark roasted malt and bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavor and aroma burst from this pitch black milk stout. The full body and sweetness are derived from the addition of lactose (aka milk sugar) which is not fermentable by beer yeast. A healthy dose of English Kent Goldings hops provides a counterpoint to this ale’s rich and complex maltiness.

Appearance: near black, creamy light tan head. Aroma: relatively light, with cocoa, roast coffee, hint of vanilla. Taste: bittersweet dark chocolate, general roast, light licorice and smoke. Finish: smooth and creamy, lightly dry. Notes: Just average for me, with a bit of smoky licorice character that felt a bit out of place in a sweet stout. Draught at Victoria’s Gastropub, Columbia, Maryland.

Unexpectedly stumbled across this in Prohibition in Powell Poured from a bomber into a pint glass. Aroma is of chocolate but very light. Appearance is dark like old motor oil with no head however when swirled produced a tan head that vanished in seconds. Taste is excellent with sweet chocolate, roasted malt, coffee, and vanilla, with a slight acidic presence. Palate is very good with a good amount of carbonation. Overall a very good milk stout and certainty recommended. Cheers!

22oz bottle poured at home. Black with thin ring of off white head. Licorice cocoa marshmallow aroma. Milky chocolate and a slight peppermint taste. Delicious beer well done

Pours dark with a mocha creamy foam head that laces my glass. The flavor is a mixture of coffee and roasted dark malts. In addition there is a creamy cocoa lactose sweetness with a soft acidic character that in turn blends well. The finish is rather enjoyable and has a pleasant lingering bitterness. In the aroma I noticed lightly roasted dark malts, a hint of coffee, and a sugary sweetness with mild chocolate notes. Overall this is a nicely done and very drinkable brew but it lacked in rich flavors that in turn didnt standout to make this a more memorable beverage for me.

Very lush full flavors of roasted malt, cocoa powder, creaminess. At $16/bottle I’ll hardly make it a regular pleasure, but a pleasure all the same. Against the Grain makes some terrific beers.

Bottle. Pours a deep brown with a nice big fluffy tan head. Aroma of cocoa, roast malt. Taste is chocolate milk, dusty cocoa, some slight coffee, sweet lactose. Very nice, but $15 for this?

(bottle - 22 oz) Dark brown pour with a thick tan head. Lightly roasted aroma with a hint of coffee and cream. Bitter roasted coffee malts at the start with a smooth and creamy middle and a bitingly bitter finish.
