COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Not your typical "Jelly of the Month Club" beer. Dark roasted malt and bittersweet cocoa and coffee flavor and aroma burst from this pitch black milk stout. The full body and sweetness are derived from the addition of lactose (aka milk sugar) which is not fermentable by beer yeast. A healthy dose of English Kent Goldings hops provides a counterpoint to this aleís rich and complex maltiness.

Can shared at RBWG 2016. From bottle barn. Mahogany brown coloured pour with a thin mid tan head. Aroma is earthy ashy roast, light wood. Flavour is composed of sweet sweet, burnt earth, lactose milk sugar, light ashy. Palate is frothy carbonation, rounded with a semi drying finish. Little earthy.

Can at hotel lobby fart share @RBWG 2016. Almost opaque black liquid with small light tan head. Aroma of licorice, light citrus, light ash, toast, and tangerine. Taste is light sweet and light bitter with notes of light coffee, light licorice and citrus. Medium bodied with medium carbonation. Nice.

Can shared during RBWG 2016. Pours deep brown-black with a creamy tan head. Boozy chocolate in the nose, dark sugars, hints of raisins. Medium to heavy sweet flavor with some burnt marshmallows, baking cocoa, moderate earthy bitterness. Medium bodied with fine to average carbonation. Lightly warming on the finish, with further cocoa, burnt caramel. Not bad.

Can split in the hotel lobby, RBWG í16, thanks to Name Withheld, 02/02/16. Black with a decent tan covering. Nose is light roast, charr, toffee fudge, raisens, chocolate. Taste comprises cocoa powder, vanilla, lactic tang, charr, roast malt, light peppery spice. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a dose of candied fruit and vanilla. Decent enough sweet stoot.

Dark, deep, deep ruby, nearly opaque. 1 inch+ tan/brown bubbly, lumpy, thick head. Smoakey sweet aroma. Dark fruits, nutty, hints of coffee, perhaps a bit of chocolate. Very nice. Moderate feel, not thin by any means. Smooth malt-dominated initial taste. Finish is appropriately bitter, but not overly so. Taste does not seem as complex as the aroma, mostly dark malts, nutty, with hop bittering. Smooth and clean, not sweet. Very nice stout without all the (sometimes overdone) adjunct flavors that are all the rage. There is still a lot to be said for a well-done true to style stout. (But their artwork is about the worst in the business, IMO.)

Pours dark brown with a small tan head. The aroma has smooth roast, some soy sauce, licorice, dark chocolate and mild sweetness. It has a medium body thatís fairly smooth with mellow carbonation. The flavor starts with cream, smooth roast, cream, milk chocolate and mild earthy hops. The finish is more of the same with darker chocolate and harsher hops.

AROMA Roasted malt, sweetened condensed milk, milk chocolate, peanut clusters, sugar syrup, creamy caramel and just a whiff of something like maraschino cherry. APPEARANCE Pours a nice dark amber filling the glass with familiar deep oily dark liquid with a thin head for a stout, hardly a requirement but always an attractive bonus with a dark beer. Light to moderate effervescence with a few bubbles on the sides of the glass and trace lacing around the rim. TASTE Distinctive light roast coffee flavors up front and mid-palate with a mild sweet milkiness moving in behind reminiscent of cafe au lait. Sweetness comes on quite late and lingers on the finish leaving the mouth and teeth sticky. Carbonation is good keeping the beer nice and light and drinkable. Alcohol is well integrated and not obvious. PALATE Full bodied, malty, heavy, creamy and mouthwatering. Deceptively light with good effervescence. OVERALL Another one of those beers that seem like an incredible mismatch of aroma and flavor, but not necessarily in a strong or offensive way Iíve found other beers guilty of. Aromatics are amazing, flavor isnít bad, looks and mouthfeel are respectable. Not a bad beer but too bad it doesnít deliver more on taste for upwards of $15/bottle.
