COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally an Against the Grain Brewery and Brouwerij De Molen collaboration beer. For the first incarnation, De Molen head brewer Menno Oliver hopped in a muscle car and drove straight through from the Netherlands to Louisville, KY (that’s USA folks) to brew this bourbon inspired ale, and we liked it so much, we decided to do it again. We took the ingredients in bourbon whiskey (Barley, Rye, Corn) and then smoked them with cherry wood and brewed a huge imperial stout with them. Then to top it off we aged it in Pappy VanWinkle Bourbon Barrels. The resulting beer is rich, smokey and complex, with a bourbon character of caramel, vanilla and spice. Bottle has orange reddish orange) wax top. Only the first version was aged in Pappy barrels. Draft at Blind Tiger with Paul, Andy, and Tom. Pours a jet black body with very minimal lacing. Aroma is sweet bourbon, light cocoa and roast. Mouthfeel is rich with notes of chocolate, oak, bourbon, molasses, toffee and melted caramel candy. Nice.

22oz bomber cellared for 7 months and poured into a snifter glass. I was thinking of saving this for a special occation, but it’s Louisville Craft Beer Week this week, so why not now? Pours black with a khaki brown head that fades into a ring of bubbles. Some spotty lacing that mostly slides back down into the beer. Aroma of black licorice, tobacco, smoke, coffee, dark chocolate, rye, bourbon and oak. Taste is huge! Smokey, toasted oak, bourbon, rye, dark fruit, black licorice, vanilla, coffee, dark chocolate. Alcohol is actually rather subdued for a 13%er. You can definetly taste it, but it’s a bit more subdued and not overpowering. The alcohol burn is not nearly as strong as expected. The rye adds a spicy little kick that adds a bit more depth to this that helps it stand out from the rest of the bourbon barrel aged imperial stouts I’ve had. Delicious, long drawn out finish of chocolate, vanilla and oak with a hint of bourbon. Full bodied, oily texture, average carbonation. This is a sipper beer, but I’m having a hard time sipping it! It’s so damn good that sips have become drinks. AtG really hit it out of the ballpark on this one, (yes that is a pun, seeing as how the brewery is in a baseball park). If you can find it, get it!

(Bottle) Pours dark brown to black with a brown head. The aroma holds dry coffee/liquorice/asphalt roast, light smoke, vanilla, woodshop, spicy wood, re, toffee and resinous hops. The flavour is light sweet, medium to heavily bitter and light acidic with notes of wood, hard roast and resinous hops. The mouthfeel is numbing and quite "slim" for and imp with a medium carbonation. Roast, bitter hops, wood and alcohol on the finish. Medium bodied.

Bottle bought @ bierkompass.de. Pours dark reddish brown with a small fizzy mocha head that doesn’t leave much trace while dissipating. Smell is slightly sweet and malty with toasted malts, caramel, vanilla fudge, dark chocolate, sweetened dark roast coffee, smoke, charred wood, roasted coconut and hints of soil and alcohol. Taste is slightly sweet, slightly bitter and malty with roasted malts, burnt caramel, toffee, corn bread, vanilla fudge, charred wood, bourbon, oatmeal, hay, soil, sweetened coffee, chocolate and hints of alcohol and coconut milk. Mouthfeel is soft, round, tiny sparkling, tiny dry, tiny boozy and medium bodied. Finish is tiny sweet, tiny bitter and malty with roasted malts, caramel, toffee, vanilla fudge, charred wood, coconut milk, chocolate, sweetened coffee, bourbon and soil. Tasty but would have loved it if it was heavier. Feels a bit light on the mouthfeel and a bit heavy on the carbonation.

Bottle. From Alexisdad06 thanks man! Thick black pour with a nice finger of tan head. Aroma is smoke, roasted malts, oak, and vanilla. Taste is rich smoke, vanilla, oak, rich sweetness, with a bitter finish. Very nice, rely well rounded not sure what batch this is but there is a ton of bourbon character here, delicious.

Amazing beer. Pitch black color, nice stout aromas (coffee and chocolate). Super mouthful flavor. Oak, vanilla...with a smokey rich aftertaste. One of the best Imperial Stout ever

Batch 1, 2013 vintage. Aroma is slightly sweet and roasty with quite a large smoked malt character. Some moderate rye notes and light chocolate and hints of dark fruit esters. Pours a dark brown but not quite black with a thick, light mocha head that recedes to the edges. Flavor is sweet with a lot of roast and chocolate. Tons of smoked malt character with hints of bourbon and oak. Medium light bitterness. Mouthfeel is medium full bodied with medium carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol alcohol warmth. Overall, a really nice smoked stout but the bourbon barely comes through and the pappy barrels are a bit of a waste.

75 cl bottle. Pours black with a small, short lasting, brown head. Aroma has plums, banana, vanilla, bourbon, smoke, salt, bacon, soy, caramel.. and more bourbon. Taste is more smoked with lots of sweetness to carry it. Lots of fruits, bourbon, coco and banana. Slight meat and BBQ, licorice, dark, dried fruits, caramel, chocolate. Very exciting and complex beer, though some of the tastes are a little bit odd. Gets saved by the great balance though. Medium carb and full body.

Serving: 750 ml. bottle. Pours a viscous black with a thin tan head. Huge nose full of roasted malt, vanilla, chocolate, bourbon, and light smoke. Full bodied on the tongue. Everything from the nose and more. Leather, charcoal, and light stone fruit notes. Lasting finish. Quite good.

Pours black with almost no head. Aroma is massive up front with lots of bourbon, coconut, smoke, dark sweet fruits, sweet liquorice and almost ripe plums behind. Kinda sweet smelling but the smoke is balancing it out. Taste of chocolate, roasted malts, sweet liquorice, smoke, almost a subtle BBQ feel, weak caramel and dark sweet fruits. Excellent smokey beer!
