COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Originally an Against the Grain Brewery and Brouwerij De Molen collaboration beer. For the first incarnation, De Molen head brewer Menno Oliver hopped in a muscle car and drove straight through from the Netherlands to Louisville, KY (that’s USA folks) to brew this bourbon inspired ale, and we liked it so much, we decided to do it again. We took the ingredients in bourbon whiskey (Barley, Rye, Corn) and then smoked them with cherry wood and brewed a huge imperial stout with them. Then to top it off we aged it in Pappy VanWinkle Bourbon Barrels. The resulting beer is rich, smokey and complex, with a bourbon character of caramel, vanilla and spice.

Bottle.
Appearance: Deep chestnut body with a short tan head.
Aroma: Mild aroma with hints of smoked meats, oak is the most prominent aroma here with a splash of bourbon and coconut.
Taste: Big bourbon throughout accompanied by coconut. Smoked meats hits on the finish with chocolate undertones.
Palate: Medium bodied with mild to moderate carbonation.
Overall: The bourbon dominates and throws this out of balance. The smoke goes nicely, but is also a bit out of balance.

14 ounce draft at Row 34 poured into a snifter. Pours black with brown hues and a light tan ring, no head to speak of. Aromas of dark fruit, smoky notes, light roast, peat. Tasting notes of dark fruit, some tart fruit, smoke, a bit of bourbon. Full body with a dry and slightly warm finish. Medium carbonation, oily mouthfeel. Fairly smooth for the ABV. Not a big fan of tart/dark fruit in smoked beers so I didn’t dig this as much as I thought I would.

Bottle at Beer Temple, Amsterdam on 20th March 2014 - social share by a fellow drinker. Black with thin light tan head. Exquisite roastiness in aroma and liquid, with fiery spice and rich berry fruits. Richly velvety mouthfeel and full body. Excellent!

Pours jet black with no head. Aroma of smoke, sweet chocolate. Taste is smoke, sweet caramel, chocolate. A bit too smokey for my taste but there are some redeeming qualities.

Bottle. Pours black with a tightly packed Bronze head. Aroma of good bourbon with a backlight of roasty chocolate malt. Tasted incredible. Thick and rich and massive in flavour. IT’s everything I look for in an Imperial Stout. What a beer. It’s expensive but you get some wax on the lid.

Deutlich malziger Antrunk, der bereits Noten der Fasslagerung beinhaltet. Torfig, trocken, leicht nach Bitterschokolade. Mild rauchig, harmonisch. 12/12/13/12/12/12

Midnight pour with a small latte cap that left some webbing inside the glass. Not a ton of carbonation. Heavy smoke, ash, char, and roast in the nose along with some fudge, brownie batter, and Nestle Quik. Missing the oak, vanilla, Pappy influence. Don’t get much of the barrel at all. A tasty, solid beer but not sure this one’s world class.

Thanks to koelstrinker! Pours an opaque black/brown with a small tan head. The small is roasted malt, molasses, peat and licorice. The taste is dark malt, roast, licorice dark fruit ending tart with dark fruit. Medium body with nice subtle carbonation. Nice stuff.

Shared 750 ml. bottle, poured to snifters showing a black/brown hue, and with the light beginning to wane, I believe, some mahogany highlighting, modest, brownish tan head foam, and sparse lacing. The nose was sweet cedar, rich roasted & smoked malt, and additional notes of wood, tar, and aromatic pipe tobacco. Full bodied, with low to no carbonation, the taste was boozy, tanniny bitterness, and sweet, smoked cherrywood-like notes. Big & bold!
