Orange Wax. Originally an Against the Grain Brewery and Brouwerij De Molen collaboration beer. For the first incarnation, De Molen head brewer Menno Oliver hopped in a muscle car and drove straight through from the Netherlands to Louisville, KY (that’s USA folks) to brew this bourbon inspired ale, and we liked it so much, we decided to do it again. We took the ingredients in bourbon whiskey (Barley, Rye, Corn) and then smoked them with cherry wood and brewed a huge imperial stout with them. Then to top it off we aged it in Pappy VanWinkle Bourbon Barrels. The resulting beer is rich, smokey and complex, with a bourbon character of caramel, vanilla and spice. Bottle has orange reddish orange) wax top. Only the first version was aged in Pappy barrels. 750ml bottle pours a dark brown color with a bit of head. Needs some time to breathe. Smoked rye aroma and flavor. A very intriguing and unique mix of flavors.

The best among the 2000 beers that I tried. Not a smoked as expected and the vanilla is kept well under control. No taste of pure alcohol.

Smells almost like a barrel aged barleywine. Very bourbony aroma and taste. Thicker mouthfeel. Decent but nothing special.

Wow absolutely amazing beer here, never thought I’d try this beer. So happy I’d try this. Dark pour, chocolate coffee, and so much moor. All I can say is wow.

Towering foxy-beige head over black beer. Rich Bourbon nose with all the vanilla & oak as expected. Huge head does temper the explosive nose somewhat. Roasted coffee notes. Outspoken roasted coffee flavour, bitterish, with the sweet Bourbon int he background. If I’d ever drunk the stuff, I’d hazard Bourbon County Coffee without the cream. Speciality chocolate, pralines. However, I don’t get much smoke. Rich, voluptuous warming feel (tasted in the sun at 25°C in the shade...) Excellent I.S., as expected from De Molen, but does it bring something new (exept 13 ’different’ versions? En Menno, is die wasrommel nu écht nodig??
