English style barleywine aged in Angel’s Envy bourbon barrels. Brewed with enough Maris Otter pale, Aromatic and caramel malts to nearly overflow our mash tun. We then balanced this beer with some English Nugget and Kent Goldings hops. The resulting ale was sweet, nutty and powerful, but we didn’t stop there. The entire batch was put into used Angel’s Envy barrels for nearly 3 months to gather the residual bourbon flavor and some aromatic and drying oak notes. By the way, Balling is a measurement of specific gravity.

Bottle. An unclear, brown beer topped by a small, dense, beige head. The aroma is toffee-ish, with dried fruits, pine cones, peach notes and alcohol. It’s full-bodied, warming and pleasantly carbonated, with lots of flavor. Dried fruits, pine cones, toffee and alcohol. Some booze and a faint woody touch. Tannins in the finish, with dried fruits, toffee and roasted notes. Quite decent this one, but too boozy for me. 150814

355 ml bottle.
Pours clear dark mahogany color with a medium sized off-white head. Right off the bat quite sweet caramel and syrup on the nose, wooden notes, sweet ripe fruits, malts and some faint resinous hops. Alcohol comes through a bit too, but not as much as one would expect. Flavor is equally as sweet if not more, lots of caramel malts, subtle licorice notes, syrup, ripe fruits, resin and some oak-y stinginess. Again, alcohol is at play as a lingering warming sensation on the sweet aftertaste. The heavy sweetness is justified by the high alcohol content, nicely balanced. A very heavy slow sipper.

12 oz bottle. Chestnut brown with beige foam. Nose is apple, bourbon, caramel, plum and oak; a bit musty. Sticky medium to full body with a warming buzz. Taste is bourbon, plum and blackberry turning bitter with pine and juniper. The beautiful fruity sweetness is a bit lost between the bourbon and hops.
