Truly a ground breaking beer, this Barrel aged Rauchbier was an attempt to replicate the flavors present in Islay Scotch Whiskey. We used Munich malt as a base and added copious amounts of Beechwood and Peat smoked malt, which provides the intense smoky and earthy peat flavors found in Scotch. Then the addition of Alderwood smoked salt lends a crisp brininess that is reminiscent of the sea air in the Islay region of Scotland. Aged in used Angel’s Envy Bourbon Barrels to give an intense caramel, vanilla and whiskey flavor.

Draft at Jerry’s. Light amber with good, foamy, off-white head / Restrained, elegant nose of smoke, pine, and caramel / Light to medium body, dry, excellent balance and lightly bitter finish, alcohol well masked / Stylish flavors of smoked ham, orange, pine, and caramel / Not usually a fan of these, but this one is terrific.

Bottled 650ml. -from Svijet Piva Zagreb. Orange coloured, medium sized off-white head, acid and smoke in the nose. Toasted malt, caramel, acidic smoked hot dog and notes of wood with peaty notes in the finish. Unbalanced...yes, somehow likable...yes, but all in all not the stuff for me...

Deep golden colored, strong and lasting white head but with overfoaming. Aroma is strong smoke, peat, oak, vanilla and some fruit. Taste starts very sweet, caramel and fruit, oak and vanilla, peat and smoke in the background constantly and more so in the finish. Some sourness present as well. Alcohol heat in the finish with sweet fruity bourbon aftertaste. Full body. Very interesting beer and combination but it just doesn’t work for me. All that sweetness mixed with all that smoke... and the amount of foaming.

Bottle from Dranken Geers. Orange colour, white head. Aroma of peat, sour fruit, brett, caramel and sweet malts. Strange combination but not bad.

Personal contribution. 650 ml. bottle sampled @ RBBWG IV. Procured @ Dranken Geers. Hazy golden, white head. Nose is peat, sour, musty malts. Taste is weird sweet peat, yeast, sugar, hay leading into sourness, thick brett, caramel,.. Yeasty bodied. Doesn’t really work, sweetness is weird, it is too yeasty, flavours don’t work together,…. Etc.

Bottle @ RBBWG 2015. Slightly unclear orange golden color, virtually no head. Smell and taste malts, lightly smoke, some yellow fruits and caramel, orangepeel, lightly bitter. Don’t get any bourbon in this. Decent body, medium carbonation. Meh.

UPDATED: FEB 16, 2015 Bottle at RBBWG shared by Benzai. Oranges, citrus, hops, yeast, lots of peat. Why would you wanna do this to a Blonde beer?

Purchased from Winooski Beverage Warehouse yesterday evening. $...actually, I’m not sure how much it was: I’ll have to reexamine the receipt, but it most certainly had been in the double-digits. To 12-ounce Citizen Cider tulip, it pours a sediment-heavy amber dark orange with which a white head 1 finger in length stood.

Aromas of lint, wheat grain, capers, blue agave, ash/sulfur (it was weirdly hard to detect, but it had lingered for a while once I found it), stale guacamole, sweat, and American ale yeast. Doesn’t smell too appetizing. But, tastes much the same with the addition of toasted breadcrumbs, pinot noir grapes, and wood pulp. Moderate acidity, floral hops, and smoke experienced by swallow. Strangely tropical fruity by mid-palate. I’ve gambled on AtG before, but on this occasion I took too much of a risk.
