Truly a ground breaking beer, this Barrel aged Rauchbier was an attempt to replicate the flavors present in Islay Scotch Whiskey. We used Munich malt as a base and added copious amounts of Beechwood and Peat smoked malt, which provides the intense smoky and earthy peat flavors found in Scotch. Then the addition of Alderwood smoked salt lends a crisp brininess that is reminiscent of the sea air in the Islay region of Scotland. Aged in used Angel’s Envy Bourbon Barrels to give an intense caramel, vanilla and whiskey flavor.

Draft at Jerry’s. Light amber with good, foamy, off-white head / Restrained, elegant nose of smoke, pine, and caramel / Light to medium body, dry, excellent balance and lightly bitter finish, alcohol well masked / Stylish flavors of smoked ham, orange, pine, and caramel / Not usually a fan of these, but this one is terrific.

Gushing - made all the worse thanks to the stupid muck on the crown - to a tower of yellowish dense foam on clear copper-orange beer. Smoked & sour, unripe fruit, phenols, orange and other citrus. Uneasy balance, already in the nose. Sour(ish) smoked, mineral, but with a sweetish-malty background. Faintly lemony. Phenols coming stronger and stronger warming up. As to Bourbon...? Bit astringent, phenols preventing any refreshing quality, better bodied if relieved by the fizziness. Sour and smoked - definitely a marriage with troubles.

Draught. Deep brown, beige head. Aroma of toasted malts, vanilla, smokiness (more bonfire than peat), bourbon, caramel and dried fruits. In taste sweet, caramelly with solid smokiness, very nice vaniila-bourbon notes. All is oily, sticky, very smooth on the palate. Alcohol well hidden. Grtleat brew, nice, interesting and tasty.

22 ounce wax capped bottle, no dating that I could find on it. Served in an ATG mug, the beer pours a slightly hazy golden/orange color with about an inch and a half off-white head. Head retention is good, and there’s a decent amount of lacing. I like the aroma a lot, the brew smells mostly like smoked malt/meats, along with some peat, brine and some bourbon. I think the taste is mostly like the aroma. The smoke stands out above the other flavors, but there’s also peat, brine/minerals, bourbon, wood and some general fruitiness. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s a bit creamy and coating but also is very well carbonated. I liked this a lot, but then I like really smoky ales. If you’re into smoked beers, I definitely recommend this one!

A: Hickory, isle whiskey T: Smoke sure hits the palate! Some tropical fruits like pineapple, mango, passionfruit, pine O: Very smokey, hard to find anything else behind it. I love a good rauchbier though. :-)

W tle karmel, cytrusy i herbata earl grey. Barwa: złota, głęboka, wyraźnie zamglona. Piana w kolorze ecru, drobno i średnio pęcherzykowa, umiarkowanie obfita, ale dosyć trwała. Smak: spora słodycz, nutki beczkowe (głównie wanilia), estry, ciasteczka, karmel i w/w herbata. Akcenty wędzone obecne tylko przez chwile, bezpośrednio po nalaniu. Alkohol prawie nie wyczuwalny. Goryczka umiarkowana, dość delikatna i względnie krótka. Wysycenie na podobnym poziomie, z lekką kwaskowością i nutką alkoholową na finiszu. Piwo niezłe, ale liczyłem, że zwłaszcza w smaku będzie się działo więcej.

Bottle from kihsokh. Major gusher warning, this one gushed up about 20cl when opened, and it was not slowly. Be warned. Cloudy yellow, offwhite head. smoked, malty and fruity aroma, also notes of wood. aroma leads to scotch whiskey. Flavor is smoked, malts, wood bitterness, faint fruits. very complex, and almost tastes more like whiskey than like beer. I think it is the kind of beer that you get to like more and more as you drink more of it.
