COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Truly a ground breaking beer, this Barrel aged Rauchbier was an attempt to replicate the flavors present in Islay Scotch Whiskey. We used Munich malt as a base and added copious amounts of Beechwood and Peat smoked malt, which provides the intense smoky and earthy peat flavors found in Scotch. Then the addition of Alderwood smoked salt lends a crisp brininess that is reminiscent of the sea air in the Islay region of Scotland. Aged in used Angel’s Envy Bourbon Barrels to give an intense caramel, vanilla and whiskey flavor.

Draft at Jerry’s. Light amber with good, foamy, off-white head / Restrained, elegant nose of smoke, pine, and caramel / Light to medium body, dry, excellent balance and lightly bitter finish, alcohol well masked / Stylish flavors of smoked ham, orange, pine, and caramel / Not usually a fan of these, but this one is terrific.

draft sampler that poured a medium to dark orange color with thin white head. the aroma is malts and wisps of smoke. the flavor was lacking that meaty smokey rauchbier. this meat of this comes on the back end for me...not a bad flavor but not a true rich rauchbier.

My Bottom Line:
Important alder smoke rises above a fruity yeast, as honeyed sugars are balanced out by resinous bitterness.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A veil of foam covers the hazy honey gold.
-Smoke is prominent throughout.
-One can imagine a touch of peat smoke in there as well.
-All this alderwood smoke is really reminiscent of rural Norwegian cooking and Stjørdalsøl.

Bottle.

UPDATED: MAR 10, 2015 14/II/15 - 75cl bottle @ RBBWG IV (Beerlover_Ben’s place) - BB: n/a (2015-212) Thanks to 77ships (and/or Benzai?) for sharing the bottle!

Little cloudy deep orange to amber beer, small creamy off-white head, little stable, non adhesive. Aroma: very very peated, chemical, medicinal, smoky, very cheesy, bit off. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: very peated, smoky, medicinal, little sweet, mainly just smoke. Too one-dimensional. Just read the whole set-up of this beer, not even half of all that stuff is coming through. The power of suggestion does a lot, I guess...

Bottled 650ml. -from Svijet Piva Zagreb. Orange coloured, medium sized off-white head, acid and smoke in the nose. Toasted malt, caramel, acidic smoked hot dog and notes of wood with peaty notes in the finish. Unbalanced...yes, somehow likable...yes, but all in all not the stuff for me...

Deep golden colored, strong and lasting white head but with overfoaming. Aroma is strong smoke, peat, oak, vanilla and some fruit. Taste starts very sweet, caramel and fruit, oak and vanilla, peat and smoke in the background constantly and more so in the finish. Some sourness present as well. Alcohol heat in the finish with sweet fruity bourbon aftertaste. Full body. Very interesting beer and combination but it just doesn’t work for me. All that sweetness mixed with all that smoke... and the amount of foaming.

Bottle from Dranken Geers. Orange colour, white head. Aroma of peat, sour fruit, brett, caramel and sweet malts. Strange combination but not bad.

Personal contribution. 650 ml. bottle sampled @ RBBWG IV. Procured @ Dranken Geers. Hazy golden, white head. Nose is peat, sour, musty malts. Taste is weird sweet peat, yeast, sugar, hay leading into sourness, thick brett, caramel,.. Yeasty bodied. Doesn’t really work, sweetness is weird, it is too yeasty, flavours don’t work together,…. Etc.
