Truly a ground breaking beer, this Barrel aged Rauchbier was an attempt to replicate the flavors present in Islay Scotch Whiskey. We used Munich malt as a base and added copious amounts of Beechwood and Peat smoked malt, which provides the intense smoky and earthy peat flavors found in Scotch. Then the addition of Alderwood smoked salt lends a crisp brininess that is reminiscent of the sea air in the Islay region of Scotland. Aged in used Angel’s Envy Bourbon Barrels to give an intense caramel, vanilla and whiskey flavor.

A very good peaty smoked beer. Their is something else in the flavour except for the regular peat which make it complex and interesting. A good beer!

Bottle. Pours off gold. Nose and taste of peat, watered down scotch, smoked oak and touch of Brett. Medium body.

Purchased from Winooski Beverage Warehouse yesterday evening. $...actually, I’m not sure how much it was: I’ll have to reexamine the receipt, but it most certainly had been in the double-digits. To 12-ounce Citizen Cider tulip, it pours a sediment-heavy amber dark orange with which a white head 1 finger in length stood.

Aromas of lint, wheat grain, capers, blue agave, ash/sulfur (it was weirdly hard to detect, but it had lingered for a while once I found it), stale guacamole, sweat, and American ale yeast. Doesn’t smell too appetizing. But, tastes much the same with the addition of toasted breadcrumbs, pinot noir grapes, and wood pulp. Moderate acidity, floral hops, and smoke experienced by swallow. Strangely tropical fruity by mid-palate. I’ve gambled on AtG before, but on this occasion I took too much of a risk.

From 750ml bottle, from radarsock. Thanks!

Aroma: Caramel, malty, smoke, sulfur, woody

Appearance: Golden, Hazy, white head with floaties (yeast?)

Taste: Medium sweet, no presence of hops, Medium sour

Palate: Thin body, sticky texture, astringent/bitter finish

Overall: Tastes almost like it’s infected. Not a lot of bourbon sweetness, but a lot of woody/oak taste. Really strange aroma, almost like tobacco smoke than smoked malts. Tastes a tad sour in a bad way. The finish is also strange almost invokes a gag reflex - sulfur or ash. One of the hold your nose as you drink beer. Tastes better than smells.

I usually rate the beer and then read the reviews but this time I read the reviews first. There must be a couple of versions of this beer out there. A couple complained of infection, one said it was dark brown, others hazy. My bottle was from Hawthornes in Philly, bomber sealed with wax. The aroma is smoky earthiness with a bit of vanilla and a bit of fruit. It is not dark, hazy amber with a thin white head. The flavor has the smoke, fruit, and other aspects of the aroma. It coexists quite well. Nice long lasting finish. For those with a bad bottle, please try it again. This may also have been my first Kentucky beer.

Bue à la pression en 25 à l’express de Lyon à Paris, couleur blonde, mousse présente et effervescence basse, grosse attaque sur la tourbe et le fumé un peu trop prégnant avec une fin de bouche malté et sur le pain.

[Bottle] Pours a cloudy light brown color with a foamy off white head. Nose is of lighter smoked malts, whiskey, peat and a sweet woodiness. Moderately smoky flavor. Earthy malts mix with vanilla and bourbon. Some residual sweetness takes away from the beer as a whole. Also this beer is quite salty, which leaves more of an impression of a heavily smoked and barrel aged Grätzer or Gose. Certainly interesting.

So, batch was deffinitely infected. Poured 6 inches of head in a 7 inch glass. Still smokey and peatey, but soured out. Honestly, if this was intentional it would be about a 3.

Bottle, pours nice Amber, slight off white head with good retention. Nose hints at light smoke, but it’s clearly infected, barnyard funk. Taste confirms this, sour, brett, slight smoke. If this were supposed to be a sour, I’d rate like a 3.9..... But since it’s not.......

Draft samples at FoBAB 15 (as well as Party Town). Pours a mostly clear orange/amber/copper color with a thin off white film. The aroma and flavor have a hefty smoked character, peat, wood, whiskey, apples, hints of spicy hop, vanilla, and a salty character that seems a bit out of place here. Strange beer.

Draft at Craft Beer Co., Holborn. Aroma is sour, acidic, sweet fruits, grapes and apples. Pours amber with a small white head. Taste is of whiskey with a fruity after taste. Palate holds a full nice body. Overall an okay beer though very special.
