3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20 dumontn (528) - CHICAGO, Illinois, USA - FEB 27, 2012
Pours dark dark red with nice clarity and a strong tan head. Aroma is ashy smoky chocolate and green hops. Taste is smoke, chocolate, pine, some citrus on finish. Body is medium, medium carbonation, dry piney smoky finish. Overall, good black IPA and definetly the smokiest incarnation of the style I’ve had.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 jcr (1682) - Jasper, Indiana, USA - FEB 5, 2012
Draft. Black body with a tan head, slowly diminishing. Aroma of roast, caramel, resin, pine with hints of coffee and pine. The flavor is moderately sweet and lightly to moderately bitter. It finishes lightly sweet and moderately bitter. Medium body, creamy texture, lively carbonation. Most of the aromas and tastes are understated which is fine with me. Strong roast combined with strong citrusy hops don’t work for me. The balance here is good. Nice lingering bitterness.

Draught at brewpub. Not an overpowering black IPA like some. Not getting that heavy simcoe. Instead, chocolate and roast flavors that make it very drinkable.
