3.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 PaulW (80) - Southampton, Hampshire, ENGLAND - DEC 30, 2012
I approached this beer at the Craft Beer Co with some trepidation. Having had a German Rachbier before and hating it, I was a bit worried. However, this dark red beer with a white head has a lot more going for it. It is, apparently, full of malt smoked rather differently, and the smoke is rather sweet rather than phenolic. Therefore, the hops balance rather than over-bitter this beer. Like a lot of red ales I get little taste and aroma, maybe just caramel (?), but the smokiness carries the beer - think smoky cheese rather than Islay malt. This smoky taste lingers long on the palate. Perhaps needed something else to make it really enjoyable/interesting for its not inconsiderable price.

Keg at Craft. Dark red brown colour with small golden bubbly head. Aroma is treacle, lots of it, quite herbal. Dark fruit, prunes. Taste is fruity, lots of black treacle again. Bitter. Sweet but bit strange more herbal stuff. Thick texture but nice.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 jmgreenuk (1288) - The Hague, NETHERLANDS - DEC 28, 2012
Draft at the Craft Beer Company, Clerkenwell. Poured a very dark brown with a reddish hue and little life. The aroma is rich and smoky, leading to a rich fruity slightly spicy flavour. The palate is weak but the flavour lingers for quite a while with some minor alcoholic burn. It’s somewhat like an English Christmas ale. Very drinkable.

On tap in Beer Temple. Not a huge fan of Rauchbiers, but this was quite restrained, reddish amber coloured and with malty fruit hints under the smoke. Medium bodied and quite easily drinkable. Not too complex.
3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 altonbrownd (4210) - Brussels, BELGIUM - AUG 11, 2012
On tap at Beer Temple. Dark amber body with thin head. Nose is quite toxic of alcohol and sugar. Taste is sweet again and hammy. Quite cloying texture. Wasn’t so big on this one. But a new US State for me!
3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Borresteijn (3651) - Amsterdam, NETHERLANDS - AUG 10, 2012
On tap at Beer Temple, thanks Potjebier for sharing. Slightly hazy reddish amber colour, off white head. Aroma is quite sweet, lager-ish, fruity, caramel, hint of salty smoke, typical Scottish Ale. Flavour is medium sweet, malty, dark fruits, caramel, nice smoked flavours, typical Rauch-style actually, bittersweet finish. Medium-bodied. Nicely done. But since the Scottish Ale style is there, this should be classified as such imo.
