The brown ale to end all brown ales. Enjoy it, because there is no longer any reason to drink another. Youíve reached the pinnacle. A healthy blend of traditional British malts give this popular style a semi-sweet, biscuity, slightly roasted flavor. Oats thicken the mouthfeel, and a handful of specialty malts add complex chocolate, toffee, and caramel notes. The hops are mostly traditional, earthy British hops, but we cocked it up a bit with some Cascade late in the boil just to show those snooty Brits that we donít approve of that Constitutional Monarchy crap.

Draft at Ei8ht Ball, served in a taster. Glad to get to try this one on draft so I didnít feel compelled to pay for the surprisingly expensive bottle and see that label in my fridge. Anyway, it pours a clear brownish amber gold color with a small khaki head that leaves ropes of lace and wisps of film. The initial aroma was on the weak side, but it opened up fairly quickly to much more toasted malts, nuts, earth, brown sugar, faint smoked meat, and tobacco. The flavor is a weaker, smoother, more watery version of the same. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a smooth mouthfeel. I feel like an imperial, bigger bodied, better carbonated version of this would work better.

Keg at Proletariat - NYC. Pours brown with a foamy, off-white head. A pretty basic brown ale. Moderately sweet with lightly toasted bread, toasty sugars, caramel. Light to medium bodied with average carbonation. Toasted brown bread in the finish, further caramel, faint earthy hops. OK.

Chestnut pour with a tiny off-white head. Toasted nuts, Nutella, roasted coffee. Really well-rounded aromas. Sweet and earthy. Dried tobacco, dirt cuts sweet caramel and peanut butter swirl. Really nicely balanced. Light body, strong carb. A well conceived example of a very un-hip style.

22oz bottle. Medium brown color. Smells of roasted grains, toasted cereal. Has a burnt cereal taste. Medium bodied. It tastes way better than the label leads you to believe! (4304)
