COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Who Shvahrted? We Shvahrted right on your taste buds. You’re welcome.
A Schwarzbier (pronounced shvahrts-beer) which is simply German for black beer. Light to medium bodied lager brewed with German Pilsner malt and black wheat. Although very dark in color, this beer gets a good portion of its bitterness from the German noble hop Hallertau Mittlefruh and Spalter Select, whereas other dark beers such as porters and stouts gather bitterness from larger proportions of roasted malt. This schwarzbier is a refreshing alternative to heavy dark ales usually served in the winter. 12.5°

Aroma of coffee, raisins and light chocolate. Appearance is black with tan head. Flavor matches the nose, but the finish is soapy. Palate is bubbly. Didn’t get it.

Draft sample. Pours black in color with a medium sized tan head. The aroma has roasted malt, ash, some green hops, and a hint of smoke. The flavor has more roasted malt and ash, with the green hops providing a moderate bitterness. Some watered down black coffee and a splash of dark chocolate. I get this sensation of fruit that is not quite ripe enough and has not fully developed its sweetness with this beer. Light medium to medium bodied. This was decent, but not my favorite from this brewery.

Draft - growler. Poured black color with medium brown frothy head that mostly lasted with fair lacing. Medium roasted dark malt aroma. Medium body with a dry smooth texture and flat carbonation. Medium to heavy flavor of roasted malt bittersweet with a medium to heavy bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Interesting solid brew.

On tap at brewpub
It has been a while since I had a good schwarzbier. This one is average but considering the local roots not bad. Of all the options on tap this would have been my second choice for a full pint.

Aroma / Appearance - The fluid black base is ringed by a warm red glow. Cocoa nibs, powdered sugar, and dark fruity notes give this a sweet tinge that I was not expecting. Smoke hides around the edges.

Flavor / Palate - Ash and smoke drive the experience from the first sip. Refreshing with a mild bitterness the total package is a bit like crumbs of trust washed down with stale coffee. Of the sessionable beers on tap this one was the best.

Tap. Molasses malt and herbal hops aroma. Black color with moderate head. Lightly smoky chocolate malt flavor. Medium body with light lactic finish. Light but tasty.
