As our time on earth supposedly draws to an end, we’ve brewed up something special for what may be the last beer you’ll ever drink. But don’t worry—this big, bold stout is sure to make those enjoying it forget what potentially lies just ahead. Intended to be opened on December 20, the day before the predicted end of the world, Final Departure Imperial Stout boasts a 9.9 percent ABV and 75 IBUs. As Airways Brewing Company’s darkest beer yet, notes of coffee and chocolate give way to a toasty finish accompanied by a firm hop bitterness. For those who dare to take a chance, this limited edition stout was designed to get better with age, giving hope to the world after “the end of days.”

22 oz bottle from the brewpub. Pours inky dark brown with medium thick creamy mocha head. Aroma of dark chocolate, charred malt, and oak. Taste is bitter roasty malt, rich dark chocolate, and a smooth sweet finish. A bit boozy but not overpowering at all. Doesn’t sound like this was barrel aged, not much of those flavors. Rich and solid, though distant from top competition in this category like Abyss, Speedway, or Ten Fidy. Still, love to see a local take on this classic style. Hope it appears every year.

Draft at the new Boardroom at N concourse. Pours a dark black color with an off white laced head. Light coffee aroma with a hint of burnt malt. Smooth taste with a burnt finish. Decent brew.

Bottle from bhensonb. Pours near black with a thick tan head and a chocolate and treacle aroma. There is a rich dark molasses flavor with some coffee and chocolate and a dry finish.

Beer #1 of 13 in blind tasting.
Headless pour. A little autolysis (soy sauce) and charred malts. Low hop, not pronounced sweetness. I picked this beer up and in hindsight it performed fine enough. On another side note, I understand the idea of a flight based theme for a brewery. However, do I really want to buy a beer called final departure?
The aggregate score placed this slightly below average.

Blind imperial stout tasting. Sample 1 of 13. Chocolate is big. No real head. Dark brown. Some soy. Milk chocolate. Medium+ body, slick texture. Some roast coffee beneath the chocolate. Initially I wasn’t too keen, but this is actually pretty nice. . Actually pretty nice.

Bottle, and my 500th rating from WA. Pours a near-black color with a ginormous lighter brown head on there. Nose is very roasty with a decent amount of bitterness in there, and just a hint of some sour and licorice elements coming through. Taste has some dark chocolate, as well as the roasting and bitterness implied in the nose. Really solid brew - just wish it weren’t so heady.

On tap at The Red Hot. Black with dark ran head. Scent is dark chocolate and a little booze. Tastes somewhat hoppy, chocolaty. Alcohol is not hidden that well. Still, very good beer.

Ink black body with wispy tan head. Chocolate milk, dark roast malt, light roast coffee aromas. Rich, smooth mouthfeel. Sugary sweet chocolate flavors with a dark roasted malt, and hoppy bitterness to balance--good stout.

Bottle:   Yep, thats black!   Large batter like head, beige, very sticky.   This one so far looks the part.   Heavy malty nose, roasty, very barnish, slight pasture, definite soy, with a huge dose of graham cracker.   I will say three things stand out on the tongue, barnish, pasture, and soy.   Well, if you included roasted malts then 4.   Has an underlying note of dark chocolate and foo foo coffee, but its overshadowed by its huge dankness, barnish mustiness, and semi-sweetened soy.   I will say, its one smooth sucker tho, goes down easy.   The 9.9% ABV is well hidden.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate to full.   Dank, musty finish.   Has a bakers chocolate aspect about it, dry and a little bitter.   This one was decent, but really needed some chocolate sweetness to really make it shine.
