Pours black and thin. Blackened aroma. Chalky malts and floral hops. A little burnt on the finish. Not bad for this style, which isn’t my favorite.

Black color. A Black IPA by the book, perfect balance of everything that is expected: roasted malts, resiny hops; good body strength, not dry, and the hop pungency is also very nice.

Billed as Black IPA / CDA at the brewery. Medium brown, light chocolat/citrus character. Woody bitterness and a lot of chocolate, with a hint of toastiness. Good CDA.

Draft at 192. Dark brown, small gray head. Modest piney hops with a good toasty roasty malt body. Good bitter finish with dark chocolate. I dig it.

Pine and citrus hops on top of roasted malts and caramel notes. Pours dark.brown off white head. Flavors of piney notes some fruity hops. Roast caramel. Nice fruity hop finish. Dry w roast and solid hop finish. Nice carbonation and balance.

Cask @ TRH. Deep brown, clear pour with a short beige head leaving heavy lace. Nose is EtOH, Medium body and light carbonation. Burnt caramel, walnuts, pine, peanuts and dark-roast malt. Finish is medium, dry and roasty. Not hop forward, but perhaps a more balanced example of Black IPA.

On tap at red papaya in queen anne. What a happy surprise. Excellent malt and chocolate malts. Perfect hop profile and level. Piney and citrusy. Very robust all around. Very stouty and very hoppy. Sorry for such a worthless rating.

Smooth, easy-drinking CDA, though not as robust and/or hoppy as I like to see in the style. Mostly soft roast with just a nip of burnt. Chocolate in the background. Moderate bitterness. Pleasant yet somewhat restrained hop aromas. I yearned for more pine and grapefruit. Nonetheless, as mentioned, it’s very drinkable and probably appeals to a wider audience, beyond the hardcore CDA fans.

Draft at NCBC. Pours jet black (hardy frickin har) with no head or lace. Big sharply ashy dark nose, plenty of grapefruit there as well. Sticky flattish body. Lots of ash and some roast and grapefruit on the mid palate. Looks like the patent malt got a little out of hand on this one. Out of balance, but the power of the bitterness is still an interesting punch.
