4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 shoulderbroken (583) - Tokyo, JAPAN - MAY 25, 2012
Bottle at home from Tokyu Food Show. Dark amber/light brown colour, bit cloudy, small bubbly golden head. Aroma is bit sweet, lots of malt, maybe almost toffee, and some sugar, but with plenty of grassy hops in there too. Taste is initally bitter but rounds off into sweet maltiness which then fades with a touch of citrus. Really not what I was expecting, and very welcome. Feels quite well rounded and smooth in the mouth, and the alcohol is well hidden. Really like it.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 minihame2 (43) - Tokyo, JAPAN - MAY 12, 2012
Reddish brown, really nice looking. Smells like beer (hops). Nice full and foamy body. Very soft taste. Easily approachable for a double ipa.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 reebtogi (2159) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - MAY 3, 2012
330ml bottle pours a dirty amber color with a finger of off-white head that settles quite quickly to a thin ring on the glass. Aroma is dusty earth with some citrus and mild cereal grains. Taste is earthy and citrusy hop bitterness with a light grainy malt sweetness followed up with a little burn from the alcohol. Medium body with modest carbonation. A decent DIPA, but certainly not up there with the best.
3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20 Farees (31) - Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - APR 2, 2012
Bottle - A fruity flowery aroma, with a muddy amber hue. Malty tones with a strong yeasty after-taste. A bitterness is the only thing that would make me call this an IPA.
3.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 EdKing (936) - London, Greater London, ENGLAND - DEC 31, 2011
Tap in Century Break, Fujisawa. Colour is deep red copper with medium white head. Nose is very strong caramel, toffee and some lactic notes. Taste is deep caramel, burnt brown sugar, bit of graininess. This is all malt character, very little hop action for a double IPA. Very sugary and malty with an alcoholic kick.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 laiti (1667) - Tampere, FINLAND - SEP 25, 2011
Draught @ Beer Belly, Osaka. Rated on 12.09.2011
Aroma of raspberries and vanilla. Almost no hops at all, hints of fruits. Some raspberries and much overaged strawberries in the flavour. Also some hops. One weird, sweetish berry-dipa, feels a bit like Amager Rated XxX, but a bit lighter.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 Stew41 (1456) - Woodend, AUSTRALIA - JUN 17, 2011
Hard to believe this is 9%; carries the abv so well. Lots to like here with thick resin hops and a whack of treacle-like sweetness. Not to say this is dumb and sugar heavy (which it is not), rather it just shows a lot of primary fruity power. IPA typical finish with minerals and dry bitterness.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 manuchampions (1163) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - JUN 16, 2011
330ml bottle from Locals Liquor in Banff. Pours a dark, murky brown with ample off white head. Aroma is certainly bitter with west coast hops but there’s also a slightly off note that is hard to describe. Taste is powerfully hoppy, slightly piney, very viscous mouthfeel. Malt seems very underplayed. There’s certainly an off taste in there too...a tad boozy and raw. Finish remains hot and hoppy with a slight cereal malt note, but it’s totally dominated by the less than subtle bitterness. Not bad but far from great.

2.1 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20 Vertical Bacon Strips (1697) - Asshat, Alberta, CANADA - OCT 13, 2010
Man, this is a very dark IPA. Thin off white crown with slippery lacing. Not a bad smell but not what I’m used to or willing to accept in an IPA. The right qualities are here but it’s just very messed up. Mild roast, caramel, notable citrus - reminds me of a low quality barley wine - a dirty one. Weak brown sugar, some faint tropical fruit. Uhhhh.... this tastes... well, it’s a bizzaro ipa. Interesting spice similar to licorice, hint of alcohol, medium roast, citrus that almost makes it, weird hops and heat. Tastes best if not tasted at all.
