COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Smooth, rich and creamy. Rye malt blends with roast and chocolate malts to create a new and delicious stout profile, balanced with soft and velvety hops. This northwest original is poured using the traditional nitrogen dispensing method, so it may take an extra minute to arrive, but the wait is worth it. The Black Bear won the Gold Medal at the 2003 GABF in the foreign-style stout category. Have a pint of Stout with the Seven-Barrel Burger or the Beer Battered Onion Rings.

Appearance: almost black, with a short, creamy beige head. Aroma: chocolate, a bit of pumpernickel, some licorice, and general roasty notes. Taste: dry, bittersweet chocolate, some coffee, licorice, caramel, and a hint of char. Finish: smooth, nice and dry, with medium bitterness balancing a hint of sweet chocolate. Notes: Decent export stout, for sure. Balanced in flavor and palate. Very drinkable.

651mL thanks to briandot. Pours deep brown to black. Medium, dense mocha foam. Webby to soapy lacing. Nose is salty, soy, lemon, herbal, huge green olive and pimento. Taste is light bodied, very salty, soy, Green olive. Palate is thin, but drinkable, near sessionable. The major olive here isn’t my style but I can see how it won medals for foreign stout.

Bomber. Poured deep brown with a nice cap of medium tan head. The aroma picked up toasted black and coffee notes with accents of cocoa and piney hoppage. The flavor opened with tangy burnt coffee notes, with chocolate and a touch of vanilla bean around.. burnt malts and plenty of pine bitterness on the finish. Very roasty and dry on the palate.. complementary bitterness.. nice one!

Black pour with brown head. Aroma is creamy roasted malts - coffee, dark chocolate, a little pine is noticeable in the background. Flavour is coffee and dark chocolate with a nice kick of citrus/piney hops. Finish is bitter coffee. Not sweet, not too heavy, good flavour.

On tap at the brewpub in Portland, OR. Pours a black body with a finger-width, dense and creamy, dark brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is rich dark chocolates with some roasts, nuts, and light coffee notes. Flavor is similar. Richer dark chocolates with a good amount of roasts and some coffee notes as well as a touch of vanilla. Finishes dry and roasty with a creamy dark chocolate before leaving a lengthy aftertaste. Medium body and a creamy, moderate carbonation. Overall, a decent foreign stout. Rich and chocolatey with a nice roast backing. Not bad.

Appearance is a very dark almost black with very little head and lace. Aroma of sweet dark light roasted malts, bitter chocolate and coffee having a dark fruit note. Taste of the previous aroma with a light bite from the hops leaving a light bitter roast in the aftertaste. Mouthfeel is medium to full with a light carbonation. A nice enjoyable stout.

Overall the beer poured dark and thick with a light brown head. Initial taste had a metallic taste with a touch of bitter hops and almost a slight vinegar taste. I was expecting much more but this one let me down. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
