Commercial Description:
Smooth, rich and creamy. Rye malt blends with roast and chocolate malts to create a new and delicious stout profile, balanced with soft and velvety hops. This northwest original is poured using the traditional nitrogen dispensing method, so it may take an extra minute to arrive, but the wait is worth it. The Black Bear won the Gold Medal at the 2003 GABF in the foreign-style stout category. Have a pint of Stout with the Seven-Barrel Burger or the Beer Battered Onion Rings.

I thought this might be a foreign stout. Lightly roasted malt aroma with sugar and grain, as well as chocolate. Flavor is an unusual but pleasant combination of sour flavor with chocolate malt. Quite thick like syrup, and black with almost no carbonation.

Pours very dark with no head. I wasn’t even sure there was any carbonation at first. Aroma is malty, a tad sweet, and slightly roasty. Very little carbonation; mouthfeel is a bit slippery and thin (probably due to the lack of carbonation). Tastes initially sweet then a bit malty with roasted notes. Finish isn’t terribly long with a bit of hops and has a bit of bite. Not my favorite.

Bomber, bonus from Hannont, thanks Todd. Pours black with atan head. Nose is big lots of smokey malty and roasty characteristics. Taste is sweet, bitter and well rounded. This is a nice foreign stout with a bit of a bite.

22oz from Market of Choice in Eugene. Gorgeous pour, very deceiving dark body with an average head. I say deceivingly dark because this has to be the thinnest tasting stout that I’ve ever drank, even making an exception for the style. This is no Dragonstooth, that’s for sure. Also extremely malty, which is not what I hope for from a stout. All in all, very average.

22oz from Bottletrek. Nice pour, fairly thick and chewy looking with a modest head, lively carbonation. The nose is invitingly roasty, even if less strong than I anticipated. Initial taste certainly suggests the dominant flavor of roasted malts, but it’s really only a suggestion, as there’s a strong tartness underneath. Could this be infected? Very few reviews note this, so I’m inclined to think this might be the case. It certainly cuts into and against the other admirable qualities, and makes it difficult to appreciate this per style (and I’m a big fan of the style). If I try another bottle and it turns out to be an infection, I’ll happily rerate. As is, a disappointment.

Bottle from Bottle Trek. Pours black with a good tan head. Sweetish toasted malt aroma with a little coffee. Full bodied with creamy carbonation. Flavor is sweetish toasted malt, very light coffee and chocolate. It’s mostly malt. Some hop balances things out somewhat at the finish. Pretty drinkable.
