Pigfoot (2225), Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA Aug 3, 2005 Full ebony proclaims the appearance, not a streak of light seeps through, and a majestic cocoa cap holds guard on top, lush and creamy, an impressive looking stout, at the start.
Aroma begins with chocolate, molasses, spice, and bittersweet coffee tones. Earthy, gritty, rich...coffee grounds are now the primary senstation, overall an expansive, and flavorful nose.
Immensively full on the palate, at first swallow. Rich, dark, utterly satisfying. Plenty of grit and texture, flavors of syrup, rich chocolate, bitter coffee beans, tangible, and a touch tart behind the bitter.
Plump mouthfeel,... long, sticky finish,... viscous is an appropriate qualifier, but not too, this is very approachable for the stout fan. But definitely not a brew for those that shy from the darkness. The rest of us, we’re in high heaven here. A stout lovers wet dream, not too strong, not too thick, but so full in all other respects that it fulfills our every need. Drinkability? Assured. When you’re that tasty, you don’t stand a chance in my glass, pal.
A very solid stout. So tired of middling versions, blase’ people pleasers, so glad to find one with serious cojones, yet so simple to slide back the throat.
fuyajo (222), Portland, Oregon, USA Oct 27, 2008 Pours very dark with no head. I wasn’t even sure there was any carbonation at first. Aroma is malty, a tad sweet, and slightly roasty. Very little carbonation; mouthfeel is a bit slippery and thin (probably due to the lack of carbonation). Tastes initially sweet then a bit malty with roasted notes. Finish isn’t terribly long with a bit of hops and has a bit of bite. Not my favorite. WeeHeavySD (2029), San Diego (Hillcrest), California, USA Oct 27, 2008 Bomber, bonus from Hannont, thanks Todd. Pours black with atan head. Nose is big lots of smokey malty and roasty characteristics. Taste is sweet, bitter and well rounded. This is a nice foreign stout with a bit of a bite. Beardface (258), Eugene, Oregon, USA Oct 17, 2008 22oz from Market of Choice in Eugene. Gorgeous pour, very deceiving dark body with an average head. I say deceivingly dark because this has to be the thinnest tasting stout that I’ve ever drank, even making an exception for the style. This is no Dragonstooth, that’s for sure. Also extremely malty, which is not what I hope for from a stout. All in all, very average. JCB (1124), Durham, USA Sep 26, 2008 22oz from Bottletrek. Nice pour, fairly thick and chewy looking with a modest head, lively carbonation. The nose is invitingly roasty, even if less strong than I anticipated. Initial taste certainly suggests the dominant flavor of roasted malts, but it’s really only a suggestion, as there’s a strong tartness underneath. Could this be infected? Very few reviews note this, so I’m inclined to think this might be the case. It certainly cuts into and against the other admirable qualities, and makes it difficult to appreciate this per style (and I’m a big fan of the style). If I try another bottle and it turns out to be an infection, I’ll happily rerate. As is, a disappointment. bhensonb (3136), Woodland, California, USA Sep 25, 2008 Bottle from Bottle Trek. Pours black with a good tan head. Sweetish toasted malt aroma with a little coffee. Full bodied with creamy carbonation. Flavor is sweetish toasted malt, very light coffee and chocolate. It’s mostly malt. Some hop balances things out somewhat at the finish. Pretty drinkable.
