3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BlackDonald (1127) - Boise, Idaho, USA - JUN 5, 2008
This was not the most complex barleywine that I have ever had. Lacking in carbonation with alot of sugary sweet candi and fruit esthers, and then some sort of a alcoholic burn in the finish. Quite overtly hoppy and aggressively sweet. Not bad, but not really what I was looking for in a barleywine.
4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 harlequinn (2745) - Tacoma, Washington, USA - JAN 10, 2006
Amazing flavor and complexities, big soapy hop aroma with alot of candi and fruit, followed by some fresh bread. Just a hint of muskiness, but the mouthfeel just takes over your palate.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 beerinmarch (2830) - Washington, USA - MAR 27, 2005
On tap at the Lucky Lab barleywine fest 2005. Pours a dark hazy ruby with a fast falling white head. There was a lot of alcohol showing in this brew, kinda gave that burn in the top of the nose. Lots of fruity notes in the taste with a nice hoppy finish. Very smooth and warming, but still could age a bit.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Sham (1846) - Seattle, Washington, USA - FEB 5, 2004
Dark copper pour with a small, white head and thin lacing. Alcohol, fruit, hops, syrup and sweet malts are most apparent in the nose. Grape, candi like, hoppy, some malts, and more alcolohol. Thick body, with a sticky cloying palate, and a big finish of alcohol and hops. Decent barlywine, but not very complex.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 BückDich (5468) - McCall, Idaho, USA - FEB 4, 2004
Amber color with light head & lacing. The aroma is well balanced between the malts, hops & staggering alcohol. The flavor is initially very sweet and astringant but finishes dry with a little alcohol (which is well hidden). Not very many complexities but still drinks like a damn fine barleywine.
