COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Amber German Lager, with a toasty malt character, and a low to medium hop character. This style of beer was called Marzen for the month in which they were brewed. When brewing resumed again in the fall, the remaining stocks of Marzen were brought out for Octoberfest. By this means, a single style of beer came to be known by the two names of Marzen and Octoberfest.

Sampled at STL Heritage Festival - Pours clear amber with an off-white head. The aroma is quite nutty with toasted malt, lager smoothness and is very clean. Medium smooth body with some semi-soft carbonation. The flavor starts like the aroma and it is still quite nutty and smooth. There is some light spice in there as well. This was pretty good for a marzen.

On tap at Highlands Brewery. Amber with a thin white head. Taste of caramel, corn, light toffee and grains. Was an ok beer, not one of my favorites.

Draft sample at the brewpub, the fifth of ten. Pours a clear amber color with a small eggshell white head. Aroma of caramel malts, toast, nuts, cereal grains, wheat, and some grassy hops. The flavor follows those lines very closely. Light-bodied, with average carbonation and a malty mouthfeel. Pretty nice execution of a marzen, and easily my favorite beer of the first five (which I guess are the year-round selections).

On tap at Highlands brewpub. Amber with a thin white head. Very mild aroma with malt and a hint of toffee. Taste of caramel, corn, light toffee and grains. Thin, bland and not very good.

Tasted 4/14/08. Draft from the brewpub. Filtered with the color of cherry wood. Off white moldy head. Touch nutty and caramel in the aroma. Touch red berry esters. Good nose! On the medium side of light bodied. Caramel flavors with hints of toffee and toast. Mild cola effervescence. On of my favorites of the day!

(draught) Deep ruby (it was evening so I didn’t notice any orange) with off white head and some lace. Aroma of sweetish malt. Flavor was nice biscuit malt with a hint of hops in the finish.

Dogbrick (4524) - Columbus, Ohio, USA - FEB 29, 2008
Sample at the brewpub. This brew is a clear orange color with a thin light beige head that burns away quickly. Spotty lacing on the glass. The aroma is sweet toasted malt with a touch of hops. Light-bodied with a sweet malt character and mildly spiced hops in the background. The finish is toasty and sweet with a caramel and malt aftertaste. Slightly above average overall.
