The name of this beer style comes from the German word “alt” meaning “old”. This refers to the aging that alts undergo since they ferment more slowly and at colder temperatures than most ales. Slow fermentation helps condition the flavors in Alaskan Amber, contributing to its overall balance and smoothness.

looks like southern comfort-the hard alchohol (orangish/red/brown). soda-like head which dissipated very quickly. sweet taste, slightly cherry or maybe maple. weak flavour.

UPDATED: NOV 19, 2003 Smells somewhat like a bitter with a hint of cherries. clear, mild red body with no head. Tastes light, malty with cherries and possibly maple?

Draft. This is a very non-dememo beer. I'm not a big fan of the style, but this beer isn't overly flavorful, and fairly balanced - no strong hops or malt.

Small head that vanishes almost immediately. Nice amber color. Malty aroma that is almost syrup. Flavor is downright flat. Weak finish, with no hop flavor that I can taste. Horrible.

In my opinion, the benchmark by which all Alt beers should be measured. Sweet, yet not cloyingly so with a slightly mild hoppy finish. Very impressive.

Nice beer. My first alt, actually. I like the body, medium maltiness. Before Belgians a Barleywines, I would have thought this was quite thick. No head, but I'm not certain if that's the style. Just OK, but I would buy it again.

Nice dark amber coloured beer, small head.Sweet malty aroma with hints of butterscotch /toffee. Quite a sweet Alt..but near the end tastes a lot like cold tea..not a bad beer at all

UPDATED: JAN 3, 2010 OK, I’m puzzled by the favorable reviews. A great amber color, with almost no head, and even the lace vanishes. Mouth is thin and astringent. Taste is very light, a little malt, adequately hopped. Pretty much an uninteresting brew, with a slightly off finish. // rerated ... new bottle, new batch ... Rich golden color, good head, dry and astringent, with a nutmeg and spruce kind of touch behind the malt and hops.//Tried again, draft in Phoenix. Even more annoyingly astringent than I remember.

Extremely mellow and quite good. Some mild bitterness towards the end, but well balanced in hoppiness. Very drinkable. Thanks to harlequinn for this one.
