3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 EithCubes (3050) - GERMANY - JUN 12, 2007
Bottle courtesy of jake65 - thanks! Malty, slightly caramellous aroma, dark with slight toast and roast. Slightly fruity. Clear copper body with a soapy beige head. Somewhat crisp beginning smooths out quickly, medium body with dominate caramel notes and lesser tones of red berries. Good balance between gentle sweetness and dry bitterness. Touch of that house toast-toffee which I love so much in their porter. Aftertaste maintains a dry fruitiness. Easy-drinking but, in the end, not all that interesting. duff’s comparison to a Newcastle Brown is apt, though this does not cloy. A very good Amber, yes, but NOT AN ALTBIER.

Nice malty aroma, slightly sweet. Light bitter hops. Smells like an altbier. Coppery clear with light tan head that dissipates quickly. Medium body with light-med carb - smooth drinking. Muted maltiness up front & a bit of sweetness. Gives way to mild nutty bitter finish and after. Dry and refreshing. A nice beer.

12oz bottle. Pours a gorgeous, deep amber-orange color; creamy light-tan head with good retention and fine-bubbled lacing; really nice pour on this. The aroma shows a fair amount of candy sugar maltiness and candied red fruits; not sticky or heavy, but certainly malt forward; there’s a touch of cherry cough drops here as well. Medium mouthfeel: following the aroma, there’s a lot of cherry juice and red fruits upfront; a light perimeter of mineral hops that merely serve to hold things up; lots of fruitiness, light candy sugar, and just a very basic presentation overall: a rather bland, candy-focused alt rendition. Lasting finish of candy sugar, red fruits, and some emergent toastiness, thankfully.

This is one of my favoite ambers. Rich and malty on the palate and lingers for quite some time. Awsome amber color, nice white head, great nutty and caramel flavor.

(12 oz bottle: Holiday Wine Cellar in Escondido, CA) Not a bad beer by any means, but not very exciting either. With little in the way of hops here, the beer is easily tipped toward the malty end of the scale. That maltiness is caramely and sweet, and while sweet is often a good thing to me, with this beer, the sweetness is quite sugary and cheap-tasting. The beer also has a modest floral character that’s not doing much for me either. The nose is also caramely, very sugary and sweet. Medium bodied and nicely carbonated, but a bit cloying and tiring on the palate. The crystal clear, dark amber color is very rich-looking. The small, off-white head dissipates fairly quickly and leaves no lacing. Alaskan makes some great beer, but this is definitely not one of them.

Pours a dark amber. Flavors of malt, caramel, and a little smoke. Sweet with a small amount of hops.

UPDATED: SEP 3, 2007 nice rich copper color. aromas of sweet malts and cooked carrots. flavor is mostly of cold tea with some mild hops. could put a few away mowing the lawn...
re-rated directly from bottle...for some reason it is much richer and full bodied when sipped right out of the bottle. the flavor gets an upgrade. now there are hints of honey, licorice root and dried herbs...

Clear reddy amber body with short head. Soft caramel in the aroma along with some fruity notes. Taste pretty much mirrors the aroma, caramel a little burnt, a touch too sweet for me to fully enjoy.
