COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bitter Billiken Ale is a medium-bodied, deceptively-sessionable ale brewed as an Americanized version of the classic English Best Bitter style. Slightly darker than the traditional Best Bitter, the Billiken glows a rich chestnut color, echoing the complex and European-focused malt flavors. Nutty, toasted almond, biscuity, and toffee malt flavors flirt with hints of wheat and chocolate. Fruity hop aroma and flavor with notes of mango, tropical fruit, strawberry and subtle resin is imparted by hearty dry-hopping using several U.S. hop varieties, including Simcoe, Bravo and El Dorado—a new hop variety harvested for the first time in 2010. The result is a quick burst of hop fruitiness, aroma and flavor that does not overwhelm the complex malt flavor.

Draft at seattle taproom at seatac. Big pine and citrus (grapefruit) aroma. Some biscuit underneath. Pours clear amber, minimal white head. Good lacing. Taste: actually almost some smoky chocolate in there. Toast, biscuit. Minimal sweetness, short light pleasant bitterness at the end; short crisp finish. Light body, smooth and almost creamy texture. Pleasant toasty biscuit aftertaste. Overall: quite nice, really. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

On draught at Seattle Taproom at the airport. Pours a clear amber color with a medium foamy white head that dissipates gradually to a film. Strings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of malt, hops and caramel. Light to medium body with flavors of roasted malt, earthy hops and sweet caramel. The finish is malty and fruity. Decent overall.

When I ordered this from the menu, I thought (assumed) the "bitter" in the name implied a West Coast hop monster. But in fact, I just now learned, I was getting a Bitter by style, and in fact, the English qualities are in evidence. Not extraordinarily so, as I didn’t see anything that screamed "English" but it did have a really noticeable malt backbone and hop/malt balance. The hops were quite mild in fact. Decent drinker. (on tap, Groveland Tap, St. Paul)

Amber in color, clear with a thin head. Nice malt and hops balance. There is a interesting hint of bittering hops in the finish and this is also a darker than usual beer.

Draft. Poured clear copper color with an average frothy off-white head that mostly lasted with good lacing. Moderate sweet malt and earthy hop aroma. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and soft carbonation. Medium to heavy bittersweet flavor with a medium to heavy fruit bittersweet finish of moderate duration. Solid drinkable beer.
