Alaskan’s spring seasonal release is a new beer experience created from a combination of traditional beer styles. Alaskan Black IPA has the appearance of a porter or stout but combines the roasted malty characters with the refreshing flavor and bright aroma of an American IPA.

Alaskan’s spring seasonal features the hop-forward profile of an IPA with the dark black color and flavors of a fuller-bodied porter. A burst of fresh, citrus notes from Cascade and Centennial hops balance the hints of coffee and bitter chocolate with a subtle toasted sweetness and dark fruit highlights leading to a pleasantly dry finish.

The Black IPA style is also known as “American-style India Black Ale” or “Cascadian Dark Ale,” and though we still may not know what to call it, we do know it’s dark, hoppy and we can’t get enough of it. Alaskan first shared their take on this new style with the limited Pilot Series release of Alaskan Double Black IPA. This spring release is a more sessionable version with the same surprising balance between hops and roasted malts.

Alaskan Black IPA is made from glacier-fed water, generous additions of Cascade, Centennial and other Pacific Northwest hops, and an array of eight different pale, caramel and chocolate malts.

The combination of big citrus and dark malt flavors make Alaskan Black IPA an outstanding pairing beer for dishes that combine sweet and savory. This includes everything from chocolate & ancho-chipotle rubbed pork, fried chicken and waffles or curried chocolate.

Bottle, 22oz, at TFODRBSG 2012. A dark brown beer topped by a dense, two-finger off-white head. Pleasant piney and resiny nose with lemon and some roasted malts. A touch of coffee too. Quite bitter, full-bodied and semi-dry on the palate, with flavors of roasted malts in the back. Piney and lemon-peelish, and quite bitter towards the end. Although a bit on the roasted side, it’s a pleasant beer indeed. 120818

Great looking black with a big foamy tan head that sticks out above the glass. Coffee and malt aroma. Big on malt, light on hops. This could use more hops for my liking but it's solid.

Tastes like a schwarz with some extra hops thrown in. The head stays for the duration of your experience. Hop aroma is subtle but very present in the taste. Very balanced says the guy who doesn’t love super hoppy stuff.

Appearance was reddish black with creamy diminishing tannish 1 finger, lacing throughout. Aromas are choclolate mocha, coffee roasted malts hints of citrus hops and spice. Taste blast of resinous grapefruit, orange, lemon hops with a coffee mocha chocolate malts is sweet. Warms up smoother less hoopy. Palate was sliky creamy CO2 with meduin-full body, then the lasting balanced finish. A good malty hoppy black...

I was happy with this beer. It definitely leaned on the porter side of things rather than IPA. It was on draft at Tap 25 and pours brown with a khaki head. The aroma is brown sugar, chocolate and coffee. The flavor has heavy mocha and coffee. Not very hoppy with some mild floral qualities near the finish, but I might have guessed this was a porter if I tasted it blind. Nice beer.

12oz twist off cap bottle pours mahogany with thin tan head. The aroma offers up bold earthiness, dark roasted coffee and some dark roasted malts. Around those notes I get snippets of citrus and pine like hops. The taste is similar with forward notes of chocolate, coffee and earthiness over shadowing only mild levels of malt sweetened citrus hops and brief moments of pine like hoppiness. Nice brew that is really more malty than hoppy. A bit more hops would be cool but . . . that’s me.

Yummy brew. Very well made and one of the better black IPAs that I have sampled. Has a really earthy flavor that is big on malts.

On tap at Dexters, pours a dark brown nearly black with a full white head, the aroma has a good amout if citrus and hops and the flavor is much of the same, good amount of tropical fruit and it has a nice mouthfeel, smooth and light, not bad.
