COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alaskanís spring seasonal release is a new beer experience created from a combination of traditional beer styles. Alaskan Black IPA has the appearance of a porter or stout but combines the roasted malty characters with the refreshing flavor and bright aroma of an American IPA.

Alaskanís spring seasonal features the hop-forward profile of an IPA with the dark black color and flavors of a fuller-bodied porter. A burst of fresh, citrus notes from Cascade and Centennial hops balance the hints of coffee and bitter chocolate with a subtle toasted sweetness and dark fruit highlights leading to a pleasantly dry finish.

The Black IPA style is also known as ďAmerican-style India Black AleĒ or ďCascadian Dark Ale,Ē and though we still may not know what to call it, we do know itís dark, hoppy and we canít get enough of it. Alaskan first shared their take on this new style with the limited Pilot Series release of Alaskan Double Black IPA. This spring release is a more sessionable version with the same surprising balance between hops and roasted malts.

Alaskan Black IPA is made from glacier-fed water, generous additions of Cascade, Centennial and other Pacific Northwest hops, and an array of eight different pale, caramel and chocolate malts.

The combination of big citrus and dark malt flavors make Alaskan Black IPA an outstanding pairing beer for dishes that combine sweet and savory. This includes everything from chocolate & ancho-chipotle rubbed pork, fried chicken and waffles or curried chocolate.

Appearance was reddish black with creamy diminishing tannish 1 finger, lacing throughout. Aromas are choclolate mocha, coffee roasted malts hints of citrus hops and spice. Taste blast of resinous grapefruit, orange, lemon hops with a coffee mocha chocolate malts is sweet. Warms up smoother less hoopy. Palate was sliky creamy CO2 with meduin-full body, then the lasting balanced finish. A good malty hoppy black...

I was happy with this beer. It definitely leaned on the porter side of things rather than IPA. It was on draft at Tap 25 and pours brown with a khaki head. The aroma is brown sugar, chocolate and coffee. The flavor has heavy mocha and coffee. Not very hoppy with some mild floral qualities near the finish, but I might have guessed this was a porter if I tasted it blind. Nice beer.

12oz twist off cap bottle pours mahogany with thin tan head. The aroma offers up bold earthiness, dark roasted coffee and some dark roasted malts. Around those notes I get snippets of citrus and pine like hops. The taste is similar with forward notes of chocolate, coffee and earthiness over shadowing only mild levels of malt sweetened citrus hops and brief moments of pine like hoppiness. Nice brew that is really more malty than hoppy. A bit more hops would be cool but . . . thatís me.

Yummy brew. Very well made and one of the better black IPAs that I have sampled. Has a really earthy flavor that is big on malts.

On tap at Dexters, pours a dark brown nearly black with a full white head, the aroma has a good amout if citrus and hops and the flavor is much of the same, good amount of tropical fruit and it has a nice mouthfeel, smooth and light, not bad.

Aroma is mild roasted malt and some citrus hop. Appearance is clear brown w a hint of red, small head. Taste is roast, hops bitterness, sweet toffee malt, citrus aroma hop. Palate is medium and crisp. Bitterness and roast are a little heavy compared to malt for the style IMO. Overall not bad. Drinkable, but the lingering hop bitterness and bitter roast was more than I would prefer. Could use a bit more malt sweetness to balance out IMO.

12oz bottle from my Alaska hook-up, thanks Tasha! Pours a very deep brown, mostly black colored body with some ruby highlights around the edges. Finger-width, creamy, brown head that dissipates slowly and leaves a nice lacing. Aroma is medium juicy citruses with some grapefruit florals and a few pines alongside a nice chocolate and a moderate roastiness. Flavor is similar. Grapefruit citruses up front with some florals and pines. Moderate roast comes in along with a nice chocolate sweetness that picks it up a bit towards the end. Finishes dry and moderately bitter with a few resins, a good amount of grapefruits, an increased roast, and a nice chocolate kick. Lengthy aftertaste following a smooth, slightly creamy, medium body and a soft, moderate carbonation. Overall, a solid Black IPA. Lots of grapefruit citrus hops balanced nicely with a solid roast and creamy chocolate backing. Very enjoyable.

Bottle. Pours clear dark brown-orange with almost no head and no lacing. Not much aroma to speak of, some roasted malt. Taste is porterish, roasted malts, coffee. I donít get any distinct hop character until the bitter finish; certainly none of the heavy citrus that the description touts. Disappointing as an IPA, ok as a porter.
