Alaskan’s spring seasonal release is a new beer experience created from a combination of traditional beer styles. Alaskan Black IPA has the appearance of a porter or stout but combines the roasted malty characters with the refreshing flavor and bright aroma of an American IPA.

Alaskan’s spring seasonal features the hop-forward profile of an IPA with the dark black color and flavors of a fuller-bodied porter. A burst of fresh, citrus notes from Cascade and Centennial hops balance the hints of coffee and bitter chocolate with a subtle toasted sweetness and dark fruit highlights leading to a pleasantly dry finish.

The Black IPA style is also known as “American-style India Black Ale” or “Cascadian Dark Ale,” and though we still may not know what to call it, we do know it’s dark, hoppy and we can’t get enough of it. Alaskan first shared their take on this new style with the limited Pilot Series release of Alaskan Double Black IPA. This spring release is a more sessionable version with the same surprising balance between hops and roasted malts.

Alaskan Black IPA is made from glacier-fed water, generous additions of Cascade, Centennial and other Pacific Northwest hops, and an array of eight different pale, caramel and chocolate malts.

The combination of big citrus and dark malt flavors make Alaskan Black IPA an outstanding pairing beer for dishes that combine sweet and savory. This includes everything from chocolate & ancho-chipotle rubbed pork, fried chicken and waffles or curried chocolate.

Being walking distance from the source, I’ve had a chance to try this several times already, and have noticed some variability. Maybe it was my palate. In general, appears stout-like and aromas are fairly true to the IPA style. Would not guess the color if it was a blind smell test. Few roasted barley aromas, if any. Flavor profile is pretty well balanced with a good dose of northwest hop varietals and some roastiness to go along. Not the most memorable but a solid compromise beer for someone who enjoys both stouts and IPAs.

12oz bottle. Pours black, faint ruby light peeks through my pint glass. One finger of tan head, slight lacing. Resinous, hoppy aroma - pine and citrus, with maybe a faint hint of roasted malt, but that may just be in my head. Thin mouthfeel, strong citrusy hop flavor. Faint roasted malty notes, but the hops really overpower. This tastes like a plain IPA that happens to be black - I’d really like to taste a little more of the "black" flavors to balance the bitterness and really represent the style.

Pint at Humpy’s Alaskan ale house. Ok aroma, sweet roasty. Dark.malt, sweet citrusy mix. Blackish brown color. Ok head, better lace. Bittersweet flavor. Medium body, smooth creamy mouthfeel, bitterdry finish. Little sweet. Ok, weak in it style.

Pours a dark, brownish-black with a good, mid-sized head that is pretty firm. Floral, hoppy aroma. Flavor of roasted malt with strong hop presence in the background. Some coffee and chocolate, as well as some citrus, with a rather bitter finish to the whole.

Kind of a bitter chocolate or coffee taste. Not as strong as I would like, but tastes great.

Bottle from BevMo: Created a thick fluffy head that looked like beaten egg whites where as the liquid was a dark opaque brown. The aroma was mild and tended to have more roast malts than hops but that’s fine with me so long as it tastes good. However, the drink comes up short with only a subtle touch of roasty malts that don’t suggest much other than a cold decaf coffee flavor. The same results occur with the hops, they come up empty and are no where to be found. Overall this is a tame and boring black IPA.

Poured from the bottle. Aroma was great, citrus hops, and roasted malt. Flavor also reflects the aroma. Wow, one solid black ipa! good lacing, thin tan head.

On tap at Republic bar. Black color. Mild aroma of hops and roasted grain. Flavor is mild hops also, as well as roasted malt with oatmeal. Very smooth palate, but I would like more intense flavor.

12 oz. Opaque with a small lasting head. Nose is chocolate, caramel and coffee. Taste is the same, with some orange and light resin. Light-medium body has medium carbonation and is well-balanced.
