COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alaskan’s spring seasonal release is a new beer experience created from a combination of traditional beer styles. Alaskan Black IPA has the appearance of a porter or stout but combines the roasted malty characters with the refreshing flavor and bright aroma of an American IPA.

Alaskan’s spring seasonal features the hop-forward profile of an IPA with the dark black color and flavors of a fuller-bodied porter. A burst of fresh, citrus notes from Cascade and Centennial hops balance the hints of coffee and bitter chocolate with a subtle toasted sweetness and dark fruit highlights leading to a pleasantly dry finish.

The Black IPA style is also known as “American-style India Black Ale” or “Cascadian Dark Ale,” and though we still may not know what to call it, we do know it’s dark, hoppy and we can’t get enough of it. Alaskan first shared their take on this new style with the limited Pilot Series release of Alaskan Double Black IPA. This spring release is a more sessionable version with the same surprising balance between hops and roasted malts.

Alaskan Black IPA is made from glacier-fed water, generous additions of Cascade, Centennial and other Pacific Northwest hops, and an array of eight different pale, caramel and chocolate malts.

The combination of big citrus and dark malt flavors make Alaskan Black IPA an outstanding pairing beer for dishes that combine sweet and savory. This includes everything from chocolate & ancho-chipotle rubbed pork, fried chicken and waffles or curried chocolate.

Pours very dark, some redness at the bottom. Light thin white head, not much lacing, good retention. Very strong aroma of hops and grain, well balanced leaning towards the hops. Not overly hoppy but noticeable, finishes with a strong grain note, semi-burnt taste. Bold body, medium carbonation towards the end (tip o tongue), slightly sticky.

A pretty solid beer, it has a nice hop flavor and a very good finish. Not as aggressive as a lot of black IPAs but solid nonetheless.

caramel, bread, chocolate, brown, rocky head, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, full body, creamy, lively, bitter, very good example of a BIPA, will definitely go for another, please bring it back next year

Bottle. Dark pour with tan head and a lot of lacing. Smells of toasted malts, chocolate and slight hops. Hops come though much more on the flavor with a dark chocolate bitter finish. Very good beer. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Nice Cascade IPA, bordering on a hoppy porter in style. The malts are what make this one. Sensual and roasty, providing a great solid base and the ultimate mouthfeel. The hops are a bit more subdued -- I'm getting some bitterness, and some citrus, but overall this is the story malts wrote. A nice sweetness comes into play as well, from origins that are above my pay grade to determine. Recommended! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Poured from the bottle. Aroma was great, citrus hops, and roasted malt. Flavor also reflects the aroma. Wow, one solid black ipa! good lacing, thin tan head.

Bottle. Dark black pour, lasting 1/4 inch head and a nice hoppy and slightly chocolatey aroma. Flavor is nice roasty malt, light peppery hops and a little more chocolate on the aftertaste. Nice representation of the style and very well priced.

Wow, this is a tasty, obvious hybrid beer that combines the malt of a Porter with the hops of an IPA. This beer is amazing. Alaskan Brew Co. gets "mad props". Yo.

Very good beer. Served at a good temperature with a nice sized, light tan, foamy, frothy head that settled slowly and loads of lace. Color is a very dark, clear mahoganey. Aroma is malt, roast, hop. Flavor is surpisingly mild yet fairly good balance and similar to nose with the usual hop, malt, tart characteristics standing out - in context with the body, which is full and has slight high points from the acid/bitter rounded peaks. Finish is like flavor, of average length and is easy drinking.

Tap at Mellow Mushroom, Spring, TX. Pours a rich black with raven highlights and a clinging latticework of off-white around the glass. Aroma is nutty pine roasted with chocolate wood and light spruce. Flavor is sprucy roasted nuts on a bed of pine sap slopped on a sweet biscuit. Average mouthfeel. Definite repeat. Love the pine and spruce notes.
