COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alaskanís spring seasonal release is a new beer experience created from a combination of traditional beer styles. Alaskan Black IPA has the appearance of a porter or stout but combines the roasted malty characters with the refreshing flavor and bright aroma of an American IPA.

Alaskanís spring seasonal features the hop-forward profile of an IPA with the dark black color and flavors of a fuller-bodied porter. A burst of fresh, citrus notes from Cascade and Centennial hops balance the hints of coffee and bitter chocolate with a subtle toasted sweetness and dark fruit highlights leading to a pleasantly dry finish.

The Black IPA style is also known as ďAmerican-style India Black AleĒ or ďCascadian Dark Ale,Ē and though we still may not know what to call it, we do know itís dark, hoppy and we canít get enough of it. Alaskan first shared their take on this new style with the limited Pilot Series release of Alaskan Double Black IPA. This spring release is a more sessionable version with the same surprising balance between hops and roasted malts.

Alaskan Black IPA is made from glacier-fed water, generous additions of Cascade, Centennial and other Pacific Northwest hops, and an array of eight different pale, caramel and chocolate malts.

The combination of big citrus and dark malt flavors make Alaskan Black IPA an outstanding pairing beer for dishes that combine sweet and savory. This includes everything from chocolate & ancho-chipotle rubbed pork, fried chicken and waffles or curried chocolate.

Pours black with a medium size foamy tan head, and very good lacing. Smells of hops, black roasty malt, and a little pine. Taste is bitter, malt, nice hoppy taste, pine, and a tad bit of citrus. Ends bitter.

Best by: 13APR12 I was excited to try this as I enjoyed the Black IPA from their Pilot Series last year. The beer is a nice black with red hues and a nice tan foam presence. Smells like a sweet porter mixed with grassy and resiny hops, maybe the slightest hint of peppery notes. The flavor follows through with a nice and complimentary style of east meets west kinda fusion. I dig the flavor profile in that neither the malts nor the hops dominate this one - itís well balanced in a classy and appropriate fashion. The mouthfeel is relatively full with some fine and soft carbonation. I like the beer, I like many of AKís beers and Iím happy to have this in the spring lineup. Iíd drink this all night - easy and smooth. Serving type: bottle 02-02-2012

Pours very dark, almost black, with a tan head. Aroma is hoppy, with notes of malt and coffee. Taste is largely of an IPA; lots of hops, with the malt and coffee in the background. Not bad, but not my favorite. Thumbs up.

355ml bottle, at tasting on 18 November 2012. Thanks to Theydon_Bois for sharing. Dark reddish copper colour. Good herbal hop character on the nose. A little smoky edge in the flavour. On the sweet side with some caramel. A bit cloying for my palate.

I find it to be the perfect IPA. Not too high in IBUs and not too hoppy. There is the great flavor of Alaskan without it being too bitter. -- rated via 'Find A Beer' for Blackberry 10

Deep black with frothy thin tan head.... Aroma of fresh herbal hops, roasted malts... Flavor is slightly thin, roasted malts, but not much complexity... Citrus hops on the palate... Decent black ipa ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours a very deep brown with a thick, beige, longer lasting head. Lots of citrus in the aroma, that being grapefruit. There is a good amount of pine, light chocolate, and some light fruity apple to go along with some slight tart. The taste is similar to the aroma. Grapefruit and pine. Iím not finding much chocolate, but instead I get some coffee. There is some sourness still as well, especially at the end. Aftertaste is grapefruit and that apple tart. It lasts awhile, and the pine seems to stick on your tongue. The body is medium to full. Texture is what I would call a balanced medium, with some sudsy carbonation. This is a good beer. For me its a somewhat cooler since it isnít sold in my part of the world. If it was, Iíd be a bit happier. This one is good. But in comparison for this style, I would choose others. I hold higher standards for Black IPAs.

Bottle: Color: Poured a brown color with a reddish tint. Aroma: Sour fruit/ Grapefruit. Flavor: Strong flavor, has an almost soy sauce element with a particularly bitter finish. A little too bitter for my taste.
