Much of the history of Hopothermia is lost to the mists of time. We know that the windswept lone brewer dreamt of a Double IPA so bold and packed full of hop flavor that it could keep the wild wolves from the door of his remote cabin. We know he was able to converse with the creatures of the woods—except for the bears who slept through the cold winter, and the mink, who were just really super rude. And we know he skillfully crafted a beer that became the stuff of legend.

There are strange brews made where glaciers cascade
By the brewers who know no bounds.
For they stuff in the hops ’til the temperature drops
And then call for a few more rounds.
In Alaska, it seems, every brewer dreams
of a bold Double IPA.
Hopothermia’s the beer, in the Last Frontier
That will keep the wild wolves at bay.

Bottle at home. Pours clear copper color with a medium sized off white head that lasts. The aroma and flavor have resin and citrus hops that favor grapefruit, toasted malts, mild caramel, moderate bitterness, good beer, but nothing stands out from any other DIPA.

Pours dark amber light retention. Aromas caramel, pineapple, citrus, spicy hop, pine. Flavors pine, citrus, caramel and pineapple. Taste alot like the dipa’s I’ve created. It has that intermingled complexity where nothing really stands out. The flavors are hard to separate in the complexity. Medium to high sweetness. Quickly forgettable.

Bottle from brown jug. A little maltier than I prefer. Some perfuminess. As it chilled it got better with more bitterness.

A bit one dimensional for a DIPA: from the aroma through the taste and to the finish, it was mostly dry, pine/resin bitterness with a long, bitter finish. The alcohol is pretty well hidden. Overall, the taste was more of a typical NW IPA than a DIPA. But if you want your bitter/hoppy IPA experience with more alcohol, this is your beer.
