COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alaskan Baltic Porter is a deep, dense beer with an intricate array of aromas and flavors derived from substantial amounts of specialty malts, dark black cherries and whole gourmet vanilla beans. In order for the British to export their dark ales to the northern ports of the Baltic Sea, they were brewed stronger than normal to endure the long voyage. The extra warmth was welcomed in these countries with harsh winters and a taste for the robust, attributes that also fare well in Alaska.

More like dessert than beer. Not a good paring with a meal but like a meal itself. Has a nice appearance and aroma and is very smooth given the ABV. It will very occasionally be in the rotation.

pours an opaque with a thin tan head, and some lacing. smell is of chocolate, malt, some coffee, touch of smoke, and a touch of licorice. taste is of sweet malt, some hops, milk chocolate, a little bit of coconut in the back. overall the alcohol is well hidden by the nice flavors.

2008 bottle. Black with a viscous light brown head. Great aroma is charred wood, tobacco, with a bourbon vanilla smokiness and black malts. Rich, full bodied. Great taste mirrors the aroma with a charred wood smokiness and whiskey vanilla on a rich, black roasty malt base. This one really surprised me. A barrel aged gem, ////////////////// 2007 draft version @ Humpys. Black with a tan head. Big blackened malt and licorice aroma. Rich full body. Big ass roasty sweet flavors of brown sugar earthy dark raisons molasses with some drying blackened malts, which tempers some of the big sweet flavors here. Reminds me Dark Lord in a way, though the 2008 version is better.

Draft @ Humpy’s & McGinley’s - Another interesting take from Alaskan with their Rough Draft series. This had the potential to be so much better. This is just way too sweet, pushing the boundary of cloying. Really rich, this could almost be a desert beer with sweet rum and vanilla characteristics that add to the overwhelimng heat from the alcohol. Not at all what I think of when it comes to a baltic porter. Lots of rich caramel and toffee, and I mean lots, with a suprisingly different hop bite in the finish. I wish that Alaskan would get over their pride and learn to work with another yeast strain except for the same one for all their styles.
