COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alaskan Barley Wine has been produced in limited edition vintages each year since its introduction in 2003. A big beer for big winters, this brew has garnered a steady following in Alaska. Bottled for the first time in 2007, the balanced flavor collaboration between hops, malt and high alcohol showcases the barley wine style, winning first place at the 2007 Toronado Barley Wine Festival and bronze at the 2008 World Beer Cup.

Bottle, gifted by GT2 a while back and opened today (rot box cleaning op) (2008 bottle). Pours a gorgeous deep red pour with creamy off white head - picture perfect BW. Aroma of rich malts, light sherry notes (enjoyable oxidization notes), cherries, toffee, caramel, very bright despite it’s aged. Taste is fruity, nice strong booze, toasted malt, burnt caramel, port. Palate is rich and full but not too sweet, good carbonation. Very surprised by this one, if rot boxes were full of these we wouldn’t call them rot boxes anymore.

2009 bomber pours a murky reddish brown with a very thin khaki head. Aroma of caramel and toffee malts. Taste is mainly caramel and toffee, dark fruits, some brown sugar, with slight raisin, and a touch of bitterness and alcohol on the finish. Pretty nice and balanced. 2011 bomber pours a bright dark yet clear amber brown with a medium khaki head. Aroma of mild caramel and toffee malts with a touch of alcohol. Taste of caramel and toffee malts, brown sugar, dark fruits, with a slight bitterness and small amount of alcohol on the finish. Very similar less alcohol and more balance in the 2009.

Pours a clear ruby color with a medium tan head. Aroma has dark and candied fruits, mild bitterness, and almost an oaky note. Flavor follows suit and adds a very mild vanilla and a hint of booziness. Mouthfeel is medium and silky with a fruity/earthy bitter robust and warming finish.

2010 bottle from trade with crajun. Thanks! Pours a slightly cloudy dark copper color with a small bubbly head that collects at the edges. Nice strong aroma, lots of caramel, toffee, and dark fruit. Taste is moderately sweet and has a light bitterness. Nice mix of caramel, toffee, figs, dates, cherries, and brown sugar. Smooth finish, light booziness, dark fruit taste lingers. Surprisingly thin mouthfeel, lightly sticky. Overall, a very nice mix of flavors and very smooth but I wish the mouthfeel was better. Would love to try to more recent vintage sometime.
