COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alaskan Barley Wine has been produced in limited edition vintages each year since its introduction in 2003. A big beer for big winters, this brew has garnered a steady following in Alaska. Bottled for the first time in 2007, the balanced flavor collaboration between hops, malt and high alcohol showcases the barley wine style, winning first place at the 2007 Toronado Barley Wine Festival and bronze at the 2008 World Beer Cup.

Draft - Raisins, nuts, vinous barrel notes and a bit of dark sugar. Clear dark amber with a thin light brown head. Caramel, chocolate, red grape and some brown sugar. Finishes with some slight bitterness. Very smooth and flavourful.

2013 Vintage. Clear reddish brown with a thin off-white head. Aroma of raisin, caramel, dark cherry, tropical fruit, and pine. Taste is full and malty with some booze and moderate bitterness. Medium bodied, lightly carbonated, and slightly dry. Kind of thin for what I expected. Decent, delicious aroma but not all that impressive tasting.

This was a 2009 that I had found in a store last year (2013). Which is crazy, since now the beer had aged for five years when I finally drank it. The hops aroma and bitterness was very subdued. Very malty and sweet wonderful. I have to say, it aged quite well. Some sherry notes detonated from the oxidation I’m sure. But all-in-all this beer ROCKED!! I’d recommend to anyone if you can get your hands on one do it!

Shared 2013 bomber poured to snifters, displaying a mahogany hue, with a modest layer of off white/light tan head foam, and spotty lacing. The nose offered an initial dank hint, with a touch of mustiness, caramel sweetness, esters as dried cherry, and lurking alcohol presence. Moderate hop bitterness was overshadowed by the hefty malt, as the taste continued with sweetness, some port/vinous nature, warming alcohol, and soft carbonation, all in a medium+ body. A worthy, winter defroster!

UPDATED: JAN 22, 2014 caramel, medium sweetness, medium bitterness, medium sourness, soft carbonation, medium body, bitter, a little bitter for my liking but not bad for the style!

Looks like dark, dank cherry juice. Beautiful color. Caramel, deep stone fruit, a nice balance of hops that go well with the not over the top maltiness. Some nice alcohol but could use just a little extra punch at the end, just ended slightly one note for me. I must say though, I’m not a super huge fan of fresh american style barley wine, so for that style it is more to my liking.

Decent dark cream head over beer the color of dark rum. Aroma apple and lychee, caramel, plum, spruce. Flavor plum, cola, spice, spruce, booze, cherries, apple, bruleed grapefruit. A bit sweet, but big flavors here and decent alcohol kick. Higher than average carbonation, decent viscosity. Finish is bitter sweet. PS; I had to re-rate. This is sweet, but really very good. One of my favorites.

Amazing beer! I was both shocked and pleasantly surprised by this one. And I don’t care for Alaskan beers. Dim, mossy hue. Soft and pillowy head. I can automatically detect the hops and barley. You can detect the booze but vey faintly. The interplay with the hops and alcohol works and serves to balance each other out. The washdown is smooth and not as bitter as I thought it would be. A warm beer to enjoy during the winter. Share this with your brew bro. A beer definitely meant to be savored.

Ok, here’s the situation. Too much barley can make things unpredictable. This anise colored beer gives up its anise aroma to the weak off-white film on top. With so much anise its getting a good wrap. Ok. Though the aroma is cool, the mouthfeel is heavier and, oh, the alcohol... what alcohol? p.s. The lacing looks better than Jenna Jameson.
