Amazing beer! I was both shocked and pleasantly surprised by this one. And I donít care for Alaskan beers. Dim, mossy hue. Soft and pillowy head. I can automatically detect the hops and barley. You can detect the booze but vey faintly. The interplay with the hops and alcohol works and serves to balance each other out. The washdown is smooth and not as bitter as I thought it would be. A warm beer to enjoy during the winter. Share this with your brew bro. A beer definitely meant to be savored.

Ok, hereís the situation. Too much barley can make things unpredictable. This anise colored beer gives up its anise aroma to the weak off-white film on top. With so much anise its getting a good wrap. Ok. Though the aroma is cool, the mouthfeel is heavier and, oh, the alcohol... what alcohol? p.s. The lacing looks better than Jenna Jameson.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours a dark brown with a finger of latte foam which falls slowly to a quilt of the same. Spotty lace. This beer smells chewy, like toffee and bubble gum and sweet caramel. They talk about the hops being added for balance, malarky - this malty with english influence. It smells beautiful for a fresh barley wine IMO.
Malt, cola, hints of burnt sugar and stone fruits. This beer has me at first taste. I have had this a few times, almost always with a year or three on it. This beer leaves the shelves in this area, and now I realize why, itís great fresh! Malty and sweet with a slight bitter/dry tone, it hides the alcohol like an opaque condom as it slides down my throat. Off-full bodied with moderate carb, the finish is semi dry and inviting.
Really a nice beer. I have a hard time telling folks about this beer, as itís a nice hidden PNW secret.

Aroma of citrus (grapefruit), caramel and notes of alcohol. Pours a dark brown with a rapidly dissipating off-white head and marginal lacing. The taste follows the nose. Caramel, citrus, pine, and alcohol, with hints of tropical fruit. Medium body with medium carbonation. Overall, a nice balance between malts and hops - not too sweet a dc not too bitter, but very sippable.

2013 bottling picked up today at the COOP for about $9... Pretty good value for such a well made American BW. Beautiful.. light yellow head.. some spotty lacing.. very clear dark brown brew when you hold it to a light. very nice.
Thick malty aroma.. dark caramel with floral hops and a touch of grapefruit.. toffee and raisins.. dates? Fruity yeasty notes..
Amazingly smooth.. silky malt off the top.. thick caramel.. with just than enough chocolate.. pine and grapefuit hoppy flavors are drawn out from the sweetness.
Body is lighter than I remember... But still a great example of the style and one of my favorites.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle, gifted by GT2 a while back and opened today (rot box cleaning op) (2008 bottle). Pours a gorgeous deep red pour with creamy off white head - picture perfect BW. Aroma of rich malts, light sherry notes (enjoyable oxidization notes), cherries, toffee, caramel, very bright despite itís aged. Taste is fruity, nice strong booze, toasted malt, burnt caramel, port. Palate is rich and full but not too sweet, good carbonation. Very surprised by this one, if rot boxes were full of these we wouldnít call them rot boxes anymore.

2009 bomber pours a murky reddish brown with a very thin khaki head. Aroma of caramel and toffee malts. Taste is mainly caramel and toffee, dark fruits, some brown sugar, with slight raisin, and a touch of bitterness and alcohol on the finish. Pretty nice and balanced.
2011 bomber pours a bright dark yet clear amber brown with a medium khaki head. Aroma of mild caramel and toffee malts with a touch of alcohol. Taste of caramel and toffee malts, brown sugar, dark fruits, with a slight bitterness and small amount of alcohol on the finish.
Very similar less alcohol and more balance in the 2009.
