COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alaskan Barley Wine has been produced in limited edition vintages each year since its introduction in 2003. A big beer for big winters, this brew has garnered a steady following in Alaska. Bottled for the first time in 2007, the balanced flavor collaboration between hops, malt and high alcohol showcases the barley wine style, winning first place at the 2007 Toronado Barley Wine Festival and bronze at the 2008 World Beer Cup.

Bottle... VBWT2008... Clear copper ale with a small, creamy, white head. Good retention. Aromas of caramel, dark fruits and chocolate malt intertwine nicely with a vinous depth, complexity and fragility resembling pinot noir. Full-bodied and creamy with soft carbonation. Bitter-sweet caramel and chocolate stand alongside blended red wines. Medium sweet, moderately bitter, caramelly finish. Thanks go out to Beerlando for sharing this excellent beer!

2007 bottle shared with bhensonb. This dark brown ale poured with a thin beige head, eliciting a caramel and plum aroma. There is a strong caramel malt flavor with raisins, and a long chalky hop finish. The mellow flavor effectively conceals the alcohol content.

2007 bottle. Aroma is just plain caramel. Brown color with a disappearing beige head. Strong malty flavors with floral hop. Exceptionally smooth. Not a trace of heat, and this is 10.4%. Quite an experience.

Amazing beer. Flavor was intense, and very shocked at how drinkable it is at this point. This is one I plan to hold onto for years to come but with it tasting as well as it did now I hope I dont run through them all early.

UPDATED: JUN 4, 2008 Courtesy beerlando. Pours dark red, with some brown, creamy tan head. Aroma is boozy caramel, apricot, candied toffee, raisin. Pretty rich in diversity. Piney soft chocolate hits the tongue right off the bat, with raisin, caramel, malty cereal. Quite good. Well-balanced, bitter hoppy finish.

Courtesy beerlando. Pours a pretty dark brown, with light light khaki head. Smells of dark caramel malts, some dark sweeter fruits, apple stands out, figs, molasses, and bready yeast. The flavor has a lot of that yeast character to it, along with the typical dark fruit and caramel malt you get in barley wines. This seemed to be balanced well, and the alcohol was masked pretty proficiently. Pretty standard in its flavors for this style, but thats not a bad thing. Tasty.
