4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours very dark for style, deep mahogany with a dense of-white head. Very clear, with ruby notes. Aroma is wonderful Northwest hops upfront, very fresh (dry hopped?), followed closely by dark malts, producing some chocolate and hints of coffee aromas. Flavor follows through after aroma, with more NW hops, and a great dark chocolate character. Aftertaste is more dark chocolate, backed by more NW hops. Body is pleasantly full. Great American-style Barleywine! One of the best!

Aroma Ė Deep huge barley wine aroma. Tons of malts and alcohol.
Appearance Ė Dark brown in color, nice thin head and clear.
Flavor Ė Tons of flavor this beer had some and then more to give. This beer will become ore when it ages for a few years it will mellow and become a great beer for the ages. Alaska has some great beers.
Palate Ė Nice Mouthfeel, good Barley wine texture with a nice sweet dry finish.
Overall Ė A great barley wine this beer will age well and become a beer for those seeking great older barley wines.

UPDATED: JAN 26, 2008 22 oz bottle via Liquid Sol. 2007 vintage. Pours a dark brown w ruby accents and a large beige head. Nose is toffee and candyish with some floral hops. It tastes just like it smells but is hoppier than expected. An explosion of toastiness and citrus and earthiness leaves me wanting more of it all in itís aftermath. This is a perfectly balanced barleywine...sweet, then hoppy, then sweet, then hoppy...mmm.mm....delightful and complex. Body is full, carbonation is just right. I wish i had another bottle or two to age! More..more..more..why did i only buy 1 botte? ANd now they are sold out of course...FRAAAAAAAAKKKK!! World class stuff++.

UPDATED: JAN 16, 2012 í07 bottle, fresh
Oh my goodness! This is a superb west-coast barley wine. Rich brown pour with red highlights and a lovely full head. Big floral citric aroma, big dark caramel sugars, alcohol. Thatís good, but the taste is what really shines. Lovely balance of brown sugar molassas malts and orange with mint hops; bananas flambes, subtle yeast-driven spices, lovely resiny close. Dang this thing is good. Outrageously good. Slightly hot, but otherwise so smooth in the mouth, full and creamy, literally dangerously drinkable (I cruised through a bomber over dinner, which I usually donít for the 10+ abv beers, despite trying to hold back.)
Itís good now, but this one is going to be a world beater with 2 or 3 years of age on it. I cannot wait to explore the age profile for this beer. It could easily pull a 4.4 or even 4.5 once the alcohol mellows and the flavors meld. Fantastic! 8/5/9/4/17
2+ years old 2007 bottle, rated 1/25/10. Seems that I predicted this one correctly. This has become insanely good. Butterscotch nose and chocolate plus molasses in the flavor, beautifully rounded by the well-aging hops, all of heat dissipated by a couple of years in the bottle. Definitely high end, could be 9/5/9/4/18=4.5. Iíll bump to 4.4.
4/30/10. Really durn good, and easy-drinking in that I just cruised another bomber on an empty stomach. The alcohol seems a bit too obvious, though, Iím thinking more like 4.3 than the 4.5 I called it a few months back.
11/20/10. Seems past its prime, the old cheese coming forward and the
alcohol still heated. I think I prefer it a bit fresher. This is more like a 4.1 bottle. Fortunately, Iíve got í08 and í09 in the cellar.
1/16/12. The 2008 is now far past its prime.
Tap at Uber
Pours quite dark, elegant. Lovely sipping BW, fairly laid back on the hops, richly malty, delicious fruits, not overly complex right now but so nice to sip that I can hardly complain. Not a show-off BW, but rather a well-balanced well-crafted one. I probably would have gone about 4.1 rather than 4.3 on this glass, but my palate may have been damaged by the Full Sail Bourbon BA Imperial Porter that proceeded it.

Ratebeer rating #3,900. 22oz bottle, 2007 Vintage. Poured a deep and muddy mahogany color wtih an averaged sized tan head. Aromas of pine, citrus rinds, caramel, dark fruits, and a little earthy. Tastes of caramel, dark fruits, lighter earthiness, wood, toffee, and citrus. Sticky. Has a nice balance. Light to medium alcohol in the finish. Iím glad I have a few bottles to test out through the next few years!

On tap at Uberís
I picked up a bottle of this at Bottleworks then found it on tap. Having tried it I now am going to sit on it for a while. It was an excellent barleywine. However the hotness detracted just a bit from the overall experience. Age will do this one wonders at which point Iíll have to rerate it.
Aroma / Appearance - The dark black fluid lurked underneath a minimalist head and sticky lacing. The nose was a little fresh for a barleywine - peach, resins and malts formed a combination that reminded me of freshly stained wood. It was thick almost to the point of being suffocating.
Flavor / Palate - The hops stand out in the first sip but soon settle down. The chewy mouthfeels holds woody resiny experiences. The tastes stick to the throat for a long time making this an excellent sipper beer for those cold winter days. With time the complexity should really unfold. Iím going to give my bottle about two years.

I have to say, probably the only way in hell youíd get me on one of those dog sleds is to send me off with a case of this. This barleywine is full of warmth, soft caramel flavors, plum and raisin, still a bit edgy with the hops and a touch hot, but heck, if you got stuck out on the frozen tundra you wouldnít have to worry about the quality of this beer declining any time soon. Built for those looong cold winter days they have in Alaska, isnít it like 3 years of darkness then 3 years of daylight or something ridiculously unenjoyable? Slightly darker then most barleywines, but this thing is great.

Tap @ Humpyís - This is going to be another banner year for Big Nugget. This is really tasty now. but in a year from now this one will really come into its prime. Appearance is slightly disappointing, but will retry again from a bottle in one of my glasses. Loads of fruity sweetness, dates and plums, rich caramel and toffee notes as well. Toned down the hops in this vintage which I think works much better. Very well balanced and integrated alcohol.

22oz. bomber. Excellent find in the local Top Foods market today, along with several other new brews. Color is a deep ruby red. Big tan head dissipates quickly. Huge , fruity malts are overwhelming. Plum-raisin notes are buried in sweetness. I like it now, but youíve got to age this one. Iím looking forward to vertical tastings of this barleywine for years to come.

22. Good stuff that will only get better. Pours black with a thin but dense moussy tan head and plenty of splotchy lacing. Big sweet nose--raisins, port, nuts, caramel. Creamy body on the high side of medium. Plenty of the sweet fruits and candies and nuts from the aromatics return for the mid-palate, where spicy, peppery hops join. Long brown bready finish. Goodness gracious. Lovely.
