COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alaskan Double Black IPA is a combination of beer styles, with a flavor profile most similar to an Imperial IPA and the dark black color and rich flavors usually found in heartier stouts and porters.
The Black IPA, also called "Cascadian Dark Ale" or "American-style India Black Ale," is a relative newcomer to the craft beer world. We may not know what to call it yet, but we do know it’s dark and it’s hoppy and we can’t get enough of it.

Dark brown with a bubbly beige head. Aroma of chocolate, roast, a hint of spice, and tree bark. Taste is lots of roasted malts and bitter chocolate. Medium bodied. Decent, but a bit one dimensional.

Bottle from the co-op. A dark brown pour, as expected, with a thick creamy tan head. Heavy roast in the nose along with citrus and pine. The roast is sharp and defined in the taste... pine and citrus ride along to keep the edges smooth. Still the hops to roast flavors get a little separated. Only a minor detriment. There is a faint off flavor that I can’t pinpoint, but associate with chalk and alcohol. Overall a good CDA.

From a bomber. Pours a dark brownish red. Makes a thick tan head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is of roasted barley and alcohol. Tastes of coffee and a bit medicinal. Not a big favorite. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This beer pours a dark brown color with a tinge of red around the edges, and a medium foamy tan head that diminishes gradually. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, pine and hops. Medium-bodied with flavors of roast malt, resiny hops and coffee. The finish is roasty coffee and malt up front with a lingering piney hops aftertaste. Good beer all around.

Pours a solid black with a tan head and lacing. It has a rich aroma of piney hops, some floral notes, and toast and coffee. The flavor is toasty malt up front with a hoppy backbone and slightly chocolate, bitter finish with a bit of chalkiness over a medium-heavy body. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From bottle to tulip. Slight roast and perfume hop. Black with tan head. Taste is cocoa and slight citrus. Chalky aspects. A little milk as it warmed.

Quite nice. Above average, but not my favorite of this style (which is one of my all time favorites). Everything is going on here in the right ways, but I want a bit more roastiness in the malts.

Bottle. A dark brown color with a lush tan head. A sweet chocolate and dark fruit aroma with a strong malty finish. The hops are subordinate in this as the imperial porter flavors and aroma take charge.

SHIG (3851) - Wasilla, Alaska, USA - FEB 7, 2015
Bottle: Poured a pitch black with a light brown creamy head. The aroma is nice hops with roasted malts. Taste is an edgy hops bitter, little spice, and roasted maltiness.

651 ml. bottle. 7.7% ABV per the label. Pours a medium thick, well retained, light beige head, with some lacing, over a clear brown (SRM 25) body......nose is pine, resin, citrus peel, light cocoa, no esters, balance to the hops......taste is pine, resin, grapefruit peel, licorice, pineapple, all from the hops, light cocoa, very light chocolate, wisps of coffee, from the malts, no esters, balance to the hops, with a moderate bitter finish.....mouth feel, medium body, slightly sticky, slight alcohol warmth carbonation makes moderate creaminess. This is a pleasant easy drinking Black I/DIPA. It is light on the roasted malt side with minimal coffee, light chocolate from the malts, with the result being too hop dominated. It could use more dark roasted malts to better meet this delightful style. BJCP 6/3/13/4/6
