Clear ruby black color/ viscous tan head. Nice dusty black malt, caramel, chocolate, pine sap aromas. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body. Very good mesh of dry black malts, sweet caramel, pine sap, tropical fruit flavors. Enjoyed the draft version a little more than the bottled.

Draft@ The 2009 Great Alaska Beer and Barleywine fest. Dark brown with a tan head. Nice piney and floral hop aroma with roasty malts. Smooth medium body. Strong floral and pine hop flavors riding a caramel sweet and roasty malt base brew. Great mix of caramel, roast and hop flavors here. Alaskan needs to bottle this !

4.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bomber from Nugget Market in West Sacramento, CA. Pours really dark brown with a foamy 2 finger tan head. Dark malt aroma with some floral hop. Full bodied with creamy/foamy carbonation. Flavor is very dark malt, there’s a moderate heat burn, and there is chocolate and a mix of hops. Pretty busy ale. Finishes like a hopped stout, sort of. GFB!

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle... Poured pitch black with a khaki head. Floral, citrus, piney, resinous hops on the nose. Tasted much like the hop aroma, with a huge malt, roast, and stout-like depth. This seemed to have a lot more roast than other CDAs/BIPAs/TBAs/IBAs i’ve had and also imparted some coffee tones. The hops floored a mild alcohol bitterness which was all balanced by a citrus tanginess and sweetness.

2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 10/20
Head is initially average sized, frothy, brown, mostly lasting.
Body is black (not opaque, flashlight tested).
Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (roasted/burnt grain, dark chocolate), moderately to heavily hoppy (resin, grapefruit), with a note of alcohol.
Flavor is moderately sweet, moderately acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, moderately acidic, moderately to heavily bitter, slightly unclean.
Medium to full body, watery/velvety texture, lively carbonation, moderately alcoholic.
Unpleasantly sour in the mouth, and pretty one-dimensional aromatically. Bucket loads of raw/green hops and some charred grains is about it. Nice appearance and good mouthfeel are its strongest points. A clumsy rendition, but ok.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
On tap at The Front Door in Boise ID. Black, duh. with a thin dense an head. Subdued hop aroma for an IPA. Rich sweet and it’s of candy licorice and spices. Modest hop flavors would be a generous appraisal. Soft smooth feel and soft carbonation A strange but pleasent black beer.

Pours black with dark brown edges and a big creamy light tan head. Aroma of roasted malts, citrus, floral and piney hops. taste has good balance of sweet malt and hop and burnt malt bitterness. Creamy texture, soft carbonation, some dark fruit sweetness on the finish followed by a longer coffee/pine bitterness.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Really nice dark IPA (Cascade Dark Ale or whatever). Looks like a stout, and has a fair amount of the roasted malt character you expect in a stout or porter. Definite hop aroma and initial bite that fades quickly. Quite drinkable, although it is a bit heavy for a true session beer.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Pours a tan rocky head which looks like a stout, rather than an IPA. Black body with some carbonation coating the glass. However, there’s no question that this is an IPA once you get a whiff of the aroma. Nice Left Coast hop bouquet on the pine and citrus side. Wouldn’t surprise me to find out they did a bit of dry-hopping to achieve this. Flavor is also a jekyl and Hyde experience. At first touch very clearly a strong hop character, but that’s quickly taken over by roasted and burnt malts, leaving little hops on the palate. Bitter malts linger quite long in the aftertaste. Light mouthfeel as would be found in an IPA. As for it being an imperial IPA? Perhaps in alcohol level, but I’ve had some IIPA that will slap you silly with hops. This isn’t one of them. Still was a good one to try. Hopefully, they add it to their revolving profiles.
