Alaskan Double Black IPA is a combination of beer styles, with a flavor profile most similar to an Imperial IPA and the dark black color and rich flavors usually found in heartier stouts and porters.
The Black IPA, also called "Cascadian Dark Ale" or "American-style India Black Ale," is a relative newcomer to the craft beer world. We may not know what to call it yet, but we do know itís dark and itís hoppy and we canít get enough of it.

22 oz. bottle purchased online at Northwest Liquid Gold and shared with my wife. Pours just about black with a moderate luscious brown head that lasted through three-quarters of the glass and left extensive lace. The aroma is wonderful with a combination of malt, molasses and pine that is just excellent. The flavor is malt with a bit less molasses than the aroma, pine and fruity grapefruit. Moderate bitterness at the finish is not overdone and compliments the lingering malt flavor nicely. This is a delicious Black IPA, and man do I wish I bought more than one bottle!

Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, nutty, caramel, chocolate, moderate hoppy, grass. Flavor is heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration. Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. [20101122]

Bottled. A deep red beer with a brown head. The aroma has strong notes of chocolate combined with medium notes of alcohol and flowery hops. The flavor is sweet with notes of chocolate, roasted malt, and flowery hops, leading to a dry cocoa finish. The alcohol is tickling the tongue.

Bottle 65 cl. Courtesy of scrizzz. Pours a very dark mahogany with a warm reddish hue and a small beige head. Hard roast and juicy hops in the nose. Medium body, again a solid roastiness, dark fruits and a massive bitterness. Somewhat citric also. The finish clearly has some roasted malty bitterness as well. 221110

Deep balck with cocoa colored head. Nice aroma but dominated by alcohol. Would like some more hop aroma. Flabor though is great. Hoppy with good body. Nice finish too. Nice balck ipa.

Pours out pitch black with a light chocolate milk-brown head, very thick, much like a stout. And the aroma is super enticing. Deep green grassy hops, with just a hint of cocoa and molasses. Taste is out of the ordinary indeed, as this is my first Black IPA and I didnít know what to expect. Massively hopped, yet not too bitter. Odd. The molasses from the nose comes back, with a certain nuttiness and smoked toffee. Same bitterness as a harsh porter, but with a greater hop profile. Odd, yet delicious! I can see myself liking this style. Supremely balanced with enough of a malt backbone to combat the hop onslaught, and easily drinkable. Velvety and smooth texture. Just a good beer. The only downside is that the finish has a certain sour quality about it.
