COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alaskan Double Black IPA is a combination of beer styles, with a flavor profile most similar to an Imperial IPA and the dark black color and rich flavors usually found in heartier stouts and porters.
The Black IPA, also called "Cascadian Dark Ale" or "American-style India Black Ale," is a relative newcomer to the craft beer world. We may not know what to call it yet, but we do know itís dark and itís hoppy and we canít get enough of it.

On tap at TCBF, pours black with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malt and hops. Flavour begins like a porter/stout with a rich roasted malts, and ends with a hop punch like a great IPA. Wonderful one.

UPDATED: OCT 13, 2010 The pour is a nearly opaque black with a moderately full, tan, rocky, dense layer of foam which is mostly lasting and does leave lots of thick lace. The nose is nice but plagued by some imperfections; lactic notes and cardboard hide what seems like it could be an interesting beer. Notes of spicy hops, chocolate, and some resins found underneath the imperfections. The flavor is less plagued but still not what it could be; light Colombia roast coffee, spicy resins, some grapefruit notes, dark chocolate, and dark bread crust. The palate is thin, medium, watery, and lively. The finish is drying, bitter, resinous, bread crust, and some bakersí chocolate. This is the second beer I have tried and this one still seems to be oxidized or infected somehow with the cardboard and lactic notes. However, the beer seems to be decent attempt at the style. I usually like this breweries small batch beers but this one missed mostly due to the imperfections.

UPDATED: OCT 2, 2010 On draft at OíBriens. Arrived black, opaque and thick, with a small beige head that leaves moderate lace. Aroma is resplendant with dark roasty malts, fudge, earth and bold hops. Rich chewy flavors of chocolate, anise and heavy roast, are subdued by prominent resiny, west coast hops. Medium to full body and slightly prickly carbonation.

Its Black. The hops beat the malt out in the nose, piney. Very roasty and hoppy with an burn coffee taste. Finish with a black malt bitterness. Alcohol is noticeable.

Tap at Oskar Blues Home Made Liquids and Solids. Pours clear black with a small, fizzy cream colored head, low retention and flat. Aroma is average malt (cookie, caramel, toasted, nutty), heavy hops (floral, pine, citrus), light esters (dried fruit) with notes of plum and dates. Flavor is heavy malt (cookie, caramel, toffee, toasted, nutty), average hops (floral, pine, citrus), light esters (dried fruit) with notes of plum and dates. Medium body, warmth, carbonation, and creaminess, with a dry finish.

22oz bottle. Pours a dark brown black with a big creamy tan head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is roasted malts, cola and some black licorice.

The flavor is roasted malts and black licorice with a little chocolate and molasses leading to a big charred / roasted bitter finish. The mouthfeel is medium to full with smooth carbonation.

Overall, it seems like more of a hoppy stout to me than a black IPA. Instead of fruity hops, I get the roasted bitterness.

Bottle: Pours a pitch black color with a nice tan head. The nose is nicely hopped and.... malted with a crisp floral citrusy hop note and a mellow roasty chocolate/carob nose. The flavor is balanced, chewy body and a creamy mouthfeel amongst a lightly bitter and somewhat astringent flavor. Malty chocolate and roast and grapefruit/pine notes. Great Black IPA.

Draft at Brouwerís Hopfest. Creamy black pour, tight bubbled head. Oddly fruity nose, artificial and candy. Transfers to body, huge fruity hopping. doesnít mesh with appearance. Dark malts are very hidden, very fruit-forward and not like fresh hop. tropical, citrus, mango? finsihes a touch bitter. A very odd one.

22oz bottle poured into a Shaker at 42į. Color is black with a little purple coming through in the light. Carbonation is good producing a small light brown head. Aroma is sweet and roasted with a nice hop note. It has a bold medium body with a sharp mouth feel. Flavor is a deep roasted almost sour malt taste, bitter/sweet chocolate, floral hops and a light bitterness. After taste is sharp with the bitterness holding on and a faint metallic taste. Overall this is a very taste brew, its a little sharper then some of the other Black IPAs Iíve had but still I havenít had one I donít like.
