COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Alaskan Double Black IPA is a combination of beer styles, with a flavor profile most similar to an Imperial IPA and the dark black color and rich flavors usually found in heartier stouts and porters.
The Black IPA, also called "Cascadian Dark Ale" or "American-style India Black Ale," is a relative newcomer to the craft beer world. We may not know what to call it yet, but we do know it’s dark and it’s hoppy and we can’t get enough of it.

(Draught) clear espresso/ruby, creamy tan head. Nose of chocolate malt, citrus hoppy. Taste is very chocolaty, citrus peel bitterness, but very well balanced. Light coffee and cream here too.

My Bottom Line:
Chocolate malts are studded with citrusy hops and their bitter resins, while berries and roastiness develop even more complexity.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A creamy sheet of foam covers the dark brown.
-I simply love the flavors Alaskan get from their grain bills.
-The mouthfeel is really comfortable; rich, but approachable.
-Alcohol is not that apparent in the flavor profile.
-Creamy, milk-like caramel flavors are also perfectly integrated.

On tap at Brouwers Café.

Tap at Brouwers. Black with very thick lasting brown foam. Dark malt chocolate and hop scent. Chocolate IPA taste. Lots and lots of bitter chocolate and hops. A delicious beer.

Bomber from Brewforia, thanks to Eric for the haul. Pours a totally black hue with a large light brown head that is very creamy. A nice roasted nose, chocolate and ash, sweet citrus hops. The flavor is very nice; chocolate, rich porter elements, sweet malts/caramel. The hop presence is certainly there, mostly citrus and very light bitterness at the edges. It works. Another example of how nice this ’new’ style is. A creamy palate.

Celebrator 23rd Anniversary party 2011. It pours dark brown with an orange/tan head. The aroma is citrusy, toffee and a bit of cocoa. The flavor is roasted and bitter with some caramel, coffee and roasted malt.

Pours black into glass with a tan head. Aroma is a bit of roasted barley with a nice citrusy hop profile. Flavor is a bit basic. The bitterness doesn’t hit quite like an IPA should and the black backbone of this beer doesn’t quite deliver. Good beer, but not ready to be a full time release.

22 oz bottle from local "Stop-n-Go" market just north of my apartment on Liberty Rd,Salem $8.49 In even bright sunlight this beer is BLACK..the head is dark tan and is very thick and frothy. Looks extreme. Confusing to what is expected from a black beer..but the aroma is of fresh zesty ,piney hop..though eventually some chocolate and tastyness rear. Woah an extreme beer that is extremelly balanced!!..the lemony, spicy hop balanced completlly by the caramal/toasty malts..they blend to almost perfection..in that in one gulp i amgetting hop then malt, then hop then malt very strange but very good. Nice palte to this one..not too thick Overall a very enjoyable beer and well worth the money. PS its great to see a small 7-11 type store get beer in like this. Thank you "Stop-N-Go"

Bomber shared by BOLTZ. Pours dark brown/mohagany with a 3 finger tan head that left thick lacing. The nose is oily leafy hops, oats, burnt malt and light coffee. The taste is citrus hops, ashy cocoa, charred barley and coffee with some resin in the finish. Medium mouthfeel. Nice beer.

22. Pours nearly jet black with a dense and creamy dark tan head that really sticks around. Through a window, you could be forgiven for mistaking this for a stout. Breathing the same air, though, there’s no possibility for confusion. Smells like the most roasty delicious hop-forward IPA you’ve had in, well, days. They make a lot of these now, and, while this one keeps up with the pack, I won’t see it’s the class of the bunch. It’s "merely" very good. Nice big oily acidic pine and grapefruit nose. Shows a little boozy twang before it breathes for a while. Big creamy body, very satisfying right from the first sip. Roasty, toasty, caramelly, piney, grapefruity. Really a delicious beer. Long roasty bitter pine resin finish. Coherently integrated and still very bold and forward. Good stuff and worth revisiting.
