Alaskan Double Black IPA is a combination of beer styles, with a flavor profile most similar to an Imperial IPA and the dark black color and rich flavors usually found in heartier stouts and porters.
The Black IPA, also called "Cascadian Dark Ale" or "American-style India Black Ale," is a relative newcomer to the craft beer world. We may not know what to call it yet, but we do know itís dark and itís hoppy and we canít get enough of it.

On tap at OBriens, backlogged rating. Sweet malt throughout, with much more roasted coffee overtaking the bitterness, unlike most other black IPAs. Subdued bitterness on the back end; mild hops bite.

Deep and dark with a nice cream head. Aroma of cola with a mild hop. Bitterness is smooth. Chocolate and a light pine flavor. Itís not the hoppiest of IPAís, but very nice mouthfeel.

650 ml bottle purchased at Specs in Austin, TX. Bottle date of : 04 05 15. Deep black pour with massive head retention that coats the snifter. Aroma some bold roasted notes with a light pine.

Body is full with a stout- like density and creamy mouthfeel. Yeah baby, Thatís what Iím talking about right here!

The malts have a deep roasted character with some smooth chocolate notes that ends with a nice lingering pine bitterness that ends with the chocolate flavor coming back around to the taste buds. Very well crafted! I think this scores top in style for my own palate.

The beer is a very musky thicker IPA hints the black IPA but overall a good beer ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Brown black pour. Nose of dank pine/citrus and light roasted malt/cocoa. Flavor is cola and roasted malt with sticky pi e/citrus bitterness. Some graininess. Pretty nice.

Bottle: Pours black, with a thick, creamy tan head. Caramel, chocolate, cola aroma. Taste is bitter, heavy dark chocolate malt, roasty...licorice, coffee. Sweet, followed by a long, resiny bitter. Really nice.

Dark brown with a bubbly beige head. Aroma of chocolate, roast, a hint of spice, and tree bark. Taste is lots of roasted malts and bitter chocolate. Medium bodied. Decent, but a bit one dimensional.

Bottle from the co-op. A dark brown pour, as expected, with a thick creamy tan head. Heavy roast in the nose along with citrus and pine. The roast is sharp and defined in the taste... pine and citrus ride along to keep the edges smooth. Still the hops to roast flavors get a little separated. Only a minor detriment. There is a faint off flavor that I canít pinpoint, but associate with chalk and alcohol. Overall a good CDA.

From a bomber. Pours a dark brownish red. Makes a thick tan head that quickly dissipates. Aroma is of roasted barley and alcohol. Tastes of coffee and a bit medicinal. Not a big favorite. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

This beer pours a dark brown color with a tinge of red around the edges, and a medium foamy tan head that diminishes gradually. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roasted malt, pine and hops. Medium-bodied with flavors of roast malt, resiny hops and coffee. The finish is roasty coffee and malt up front with a lingering piney hops aftertaste. Good beer all around.
