A full-bodied deep mahogany ale with ruby red highlights. Citrus notes of chamomile, grapefruit and Meyer lemon brighten the aroma. A zesty array of hop flavors from mango and bitter orange to green mint and hibiscus meld with the nutty, roasted caramel and subtle dried fruit flavors of the complex malt profile to create a surprisingly fresh, yet warming example of the style.

Pours deep red and slightly hazy-small head. Nose is citrus, fruits and herbs, grapefruit, deep caramel and a touch of roast malt. Flavor is similar. Finishes lightly sweet but an assertive bitterness that doesn’t linger too long. Full body and caramel malty rich. Interesting. could have used more hops overall.

Poured from bomber, dark amber with red hue, nice medium off white-light tan head. Nice sweet malty nose with floral notes. Taste was balanced toward sweetness and just a hint of spice. Medium bodied, a bit sticky with good carbonation, nice finish. Good strong ale, doesn’t have that strong boozieness.

Bottle from sampler pack. Pours dark amber with ruby highlights and thick, frothy beige head. Aroma is caramel and cookie malts, floral and light spicy hops, grapefruit, tropical fruit, toast, and light toffee. Flavor is sweet malts forward which then become better balanced with citrus and tropical fruit esters, dry bready malts, floral hops, and a light touch of spicy alcohol. Medium body and carbonation.

22oz bottle, $8.99. I bought this because I really like hoppy red ales but I almost never find any good ones. . I feel like all of Alaskan’s pilot series is disappointing except for the barleywine. This was no exception. Smells nice and hoppy. Clear, garnet colored, huge head, some lace. Flavor is strong alcohol, bitter hops, malty. The alcohol flavors really detract from this. I should have known better. Serving type: bottle 12-15-2012 03:54:37

Bomber bought at Super 1 in CDA, ID. Pours a hazy amber with a medium collapsing beige head with lots of big ugly bubbles. Aroma is super caramelly with some citrusy hops along for the ride. Taste starts out a little malty sweet before some real bitterness sets in. Not bad for what it is, but I was expecting more given the scores on here. As a sidenote, I just had a New Belgium Rampant and thought it was superior, but it’s getting lower scores on here (same goes for the yummy Dogfish/SN collaboration Rhizing Bines). It just goes to show that you can never really trust the scores on here too much. Maybe I just have weird tastes, though.

Bottle: Deep amber color with a finger of thick khaki colored head. Big aroma of citrus and pine; pleasantly sweet and potent. Backed up by an assertive hop flavor. Citrus, pine, resin, and floral. Wet and a nice bit of malty sweetness. Really good stuff.

From bottle at Capital Beerfest, Sacramento. Pours reddish brown with a decent beige head and a smoky red malt aroma. There is a full-bodied smoked malt flavor with a raspy finish.

Bottle. Red/brown pour with yellow/tan head and a lot of lacing. Smells of citrus hops and toasted malts. Tastes of same with slight raisin notes. Very good and complex.
