A full-bodied deep mahogany ale with ruby red highlights. Citrus notes of chamomile, grapefruit and Meyer lemon brighten the aroma. A zesty array of hop flavors from mango and bitter orange to green mint and hibiscus meld with the nutty, roasted caramel and subtle dried fruit flavors of the complex malt profile to create a surprisingly fresh, yet warming example of the style.

UPDATED: OCT 9, 2014 Shared bomber poured to snifters, showing a cloudy, reddish brown color, with a modest layer of tan, head froth, and dots & dashes of lacing. The nose was caramelly sweet and malty. Medium bodied, the taste offered a bit of fruit, but as the aroma, was mainly pro-malt, with spice & dryness as rye would project, earthy & lingering hop bitterness, and some tannic astringency that was mellowed by malt sweetness and some alcohol warmth. Pretty tasty. Recently shared another bomber with friends, and found the appearance clearer, with a deep copper color, and a frothier cover. The aroma included initial dankness, showed alcohol at the ready, and added some esters as pit fruit, and a hint of cherry. Hop bitterness was earthy & lingering, but also possessed some citrus & rind. The body was still a little better than medium, with presentable carbonation, and a dry, rye finish. +.1

UPDATED: DEC 2, 2014 I’m pretty sure this just came out this week as I see a bottling date of "best by 12/01/2014. Hmm...an 8.5 percent American Strong Ale, yessir, night before Independence Day, hell yeah, let’s do this. This was poured into a sniffer. The appearance had a nice mahogany color with a thin to a finger’s worth of white foamy head that dissipated within a good minute. There’s some light foamy somewhat sticky lacing but actually it ends up sliding after a bit of opening up. The smell was extremely awesome as it had a very nice caramel to citrus to pine to lightly spiced. Holy shit! Where the (fill in the blank) did this come from? It ends up opening up just a tad of light grapefruit to assortment of an absolutely stellar balance all around. The taste is extremely balanced between some awesome light bitter pine to grapefruit to extra tropical fruitiness just overtaking everything but still allowing a nice caramel strength to empower a certain boldness in the flavor. On the palate, there’s no ifs ands or buts, this one sits just a simple straight up medium on the body. There’s not much of a sessionable quality to it as I found myself sipping this. For a super fresh Strong Ale, I find the carbonation to be fairly subdued but still good for the style. Overall, wow, when fresh, ABC knocked this one outa the park, however given some of the previous reviews on this, I’m afraid to age it. Sorry, if I sound like a homer for giving such high marks, but if anything, drink as fresh as you can and many will see the same things I see.

Bottle... Clear copper ale with a mid-sized, creamy, white head that never completely dissipates. The aroma is a mélange of caramel, toffee and earthy, peppery hops. Full-bodied with a creamy mouthfeel and airy carbonation. Nice balance of sweet caramel malts, moderately tart acidity and modest measures of tannic and floral bitterness. Finishes bittersweet and tangy. Bottle courtesy of newcigarz!

Draught at APEX in Portland, OR on 22 May 2013. Poured a dark red with a dense off white head. Fruity aroma with some grapefruit, pineapple and some toasted malt. Initial flavours of pine, brown sugar and biscuity malt; a nice balance of hoppy and sweet malt flavours. Finish was equally balanced.

Bottle (from a grocery store). The hops in this taste old, unfortunately. I can get a little bit of citrus in there, but there’s a lot of "old hop" smell that really dominates the nose of this beer. Taste is a little bitter, but not overly so. I get a lot of grains in there, almost to the point of tasting rye. Interesting, though I wish I had it fresher.

Pours a dark reddish brown with tan head. Aroma of hops with a hint of citrus. Taste is rich and well balanced, with a nice blend of hops, malt, and a slightly sweet taste of caramel. A very nice craft beer. Thumbs up.

Murky copper/mahogany with a medium frothy taupe crown that leaves plenty of splotchy lace behind. Aroma is bready and sweet with dough, toffee, caramel, citrus, grapefruit and some herbal notes. Taste is sweet and citrusy with toffee, herbal notes, mild pine, oranges and tea. Alcohol hidden well with a moderate bitter finish. A touch under carbonated.

Best by 13MAY13 Pours a clear crimson red with a finger of light cream foam and some spotty lace. Smells of citrus, grapefruit, spiced malts, some tea and a bit more of the centennial and cascades - this is a nice nose. Bitter, malty, spicy and hoppy - layered with nice complex malts and a good dry bitterness, along comes some pine and resin with a hint of grapefruit rind and a little touch of pekoe. Medium bodied with moderated, prickly carb and a wet finish. This is a nice surprise - Alaskan Brewing is like my permanent sleeper; so many great beers, so little sincere appreciation. In short: A malty and moderately hoppy red ale with a weird (to me) blood-like flavor. Meh.
How: Bottle 22oz, consumed relatively fresh soon after receiving it from mcberko, thanks a lot Matt.
The look: Clear ruby-bronze body toppd by a persistent small beige head leaving lots of lacings on the glass.
In long: Nose is coniferous hops, overripe strawberries (!), various red berries, an overall dank sensation, In mouth the beer has a rich body with a medium carbonation. Taste is hit and miss. Sweet berries jam, hard candies, caramel, bloody red meat, coniferous hops with a little spicy edge. Heavy on the malt front and rather sweet from start to finish. Once again I was bothered by a blood-like flavor in a beer labelled as “Red Ale”, I seem to have a low tolerance for something in many“red ale”. Looks like most people liked this beer, I don’t care that a large number of Americans gave high ratings to this beer, a large number of Americans also elected GW Bush, twice.

Bomber. Reddish amber with some serious head. Sweet and hoppy with a little bitterness at the end to help the balance.
