3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 Ernest (5181) - Boulder, USA - SEP 20, 2011
Bottle.
Head is initially small, frothy, brown, mostly diminishing.
Body is black (virtually opaque, flashlight tested).
Aroma is moderately malty (roasted grain, chocolate, caramel), lightly hoppy (flowers), with notes of vanilla, smoke, wood.
Flavor is heavily sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter.
Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter.
Medium to full body, velvety texture, lively carbonation, lightly to moderately alcoholic.
Along with the smoked porter, this is among Alaskan’s stronger efforts...but also like that one, it’s just not fully developed. The nose shows promise, with a nice blend of the usual stouty aromas of chocolate, roast, and vanilla, along with a pleasant waft of smoke, but there’s just no depth to it...I spent an hour with this thing and it just never revealed anything outside the standard stout basics (and smoke). No flaws, just plain. It’s a little less satisfying to drink, too...the flavor balance is certainly not bad, but it just doesn’t have the cleanliness, elegance, and richness of the better examples in this field. Good effort for this brewery, though.
4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Tmoney99 (7294) - Cincinnati, Ohio, USA - MAY 26, 2012
Bottle shared by alexsdad06. Poured a clear dark brown color with a large frothy brown head that lasted with good lacing. Moderate to heavy toasted chocolate, honey & maple, smoke and alcohol aroma. Moderate to heavy dark sweet toasted malt flavor with a moderate to heavy sweet and small alcohol bite finish of moderate to long duration. Medium to full body with a smooth texture and flat carbonation. This is a standout beer.

Bottle at home from my Minneapolis Town Hall glass. Pours clear deep black, thin pale tan head, fine lacing. Nose is tight roast, nice coffee, vanilla, some light coffee-crisp "chocolate bar" notes. Flavours are moderately dry, with great coffee and toast notes, molasses, light smoke. Not the very best, but pleasant enough.

Shared by someone at the Monte’s Krown tasting yesterday. Pours a jet black with a thin eggshell head. Slight vanilla in the nose along with some oak and smoke. Taste is dry, anise. Average, I didn’t think this one was as good as everyone else at the tasting did. Wouldn’t buy it if I saw it in the store.

Bottle to snifter. Looks good; pitch black with nice head. Smells good; roasty and smoky. Tastes good; like it smells, only more subdues and with some sweetness. Good on the palate too. Tasty.

A smooth easy drinking impy stout with enough body and complexity to keep you entertained but not enough to stand up to some of the prime examples of this style. Toasty malt aroma. Flavor has a lot of vanilla and a smooth roasty malt flavor again with some cocoa and chocolate dominating a little later in the palate. A touch of alcohol and bitterness from a well hopped drink a little later. The finish is relatively quick. Toasty marshmallow is a nice descriptor. Shipped this bottle back from the last time I was out in Seattle.

750ml. Bottle: Got in trade from fiveacestx; THANKS Cam! Complex aroma of malt, chocolate, roast, slight alcohol, and a hint of smoke. Poured pitch black in color with a small, creamy, dense, brown head that disappeared except for around the edges. Opaque. Sparkling. Flavor is heavily sweet. Tastes of malt, roasting, slight smoke, slight soy sauce, and a hint of chocolate. Medium to full body. Slick, creamy, then lightly chalky, lightly dry texture. Soft carbonation. Medium sweet, malt, roast, slight soy sauce finish is lightly dry. 9%ABV is noticeable in the nose but not the flavor.

Dark brown pour with a light tan head. Aroma of chocolate and soy sauce. Plenty of soy in this one, some caramel, chocolate, smoke, and ash as well. Thin finish. Not a big fan of a big smoky soy sauce bomb.
