Alaskan Perseverance Ale is a Russian Imperial Stout. This style was chosen to celebrate our 25th anniversary of brewing on the Last Frontier in our coastal home of Juneau, Alaska.

This complex and malt forward Imperial Stout is brewed with an array of local ingredients and flavors to add dimension and celebrate Alaskan’s history and home. Alaska birch syrup from Wasilla lends a deep, almost tart character to the dark malt profile, while fireweed honey from Delta Junction adds a delicate sweetness and floral notes to the aroma and finish. The slight addition of our in-house alder-smoked malt alludes to the distinctive roasted flavor of turn-of-the-century malting practices, without overpowering the more subtle flavors of this dynamic anniversary brew.

To celebrate their quarter-century milestone, the Alaskan Brew Crew wanted to create a beer that was big, bold and brewed with ingredients from Alaska that could be enjoyed fresh or cellared to be brought out to remember the anniversary for years to come. The Russian heritage still present throughout our state make this Russian Imperial Stout a tribute to all that makes our beers truly Alaskan.

This limited edition Imperial Stout is brewed with glacier-fed water, birch syrup from the Alaska Birch Syrup Co., fireweed honey from Alaskan Bee Apiaries, brown sugar and an array of different malts including malted oats and a dash of our world famous alder-smoked malt.

The sturdy flavors in Alaskan Perseverance Ale pair well with rich and savory proteins ranging from fresh oysters to wild game meats. Custards, dark chocolate truffles, New York cheesecake and other creamy desserts bring out the the sweeter notes of fireweed honey, oats and brown sugar

Mmmm this thing drinks as good as it smells. Nice oaky smell with a strong malt backbone. Not too heavy for how much roasty malt backbone it packs. Definitely a drinkable beer, hits it’s mark.

650ml bottle from local liquor store, shared with bananabi11. Blackish purple tinted pour. Sweet caramel, molasses, tangy honey, light chocolate. Medium to full bodied. Sweeter than bittersweet. The blend is solid. Nice, although not as thick as hoped. 14.1

Leans sweet, and alcohol evident. Not as good as their smoked porter. Too little roast for a first class Russian Imperial Stout.

Sampled from a glass, poured from a bottle, this beer was dark brown in the glass and gave a dark brown two finger bubbled cover, the cover receded a bit, the nose had aromas of milk chocolate and chocolate, big toasted malt, some roasted malt, nutty, caramel, light citrus hops, and malt sweetness, the flavors were big toasted malt, a little roasted malt, nutty, caramel, some syrup like notes that may be the Birch Syrup, a little smoke, the finish had a light to medium bitterness, lots of toasted malt flavor followed, the mouth feel was more than medium, it was pretty creamy and had average carbonation, this beer smelled and tasted like a big porter, not an impy with the nut and toasted malt notes, I am disappointed this beer was not an imperial stout, the smoke was bigger on the nose than in the flavor, it was a good drink but not an imperial stout.

Bottle from Costco, black beer, decent walnut head, some lace. Aroma is malt, chocolate, smoke, cookies, toasted barley. Taste is chocolate, smoke, cookies, vanilla, honey (yes you can taste it, it lightens the whole thing somehow), coffee. Palate is rich and smooth and sorta nitro like too. This is like an imperial smoked porter. I really like it.

651 ml bottle. Pours black with a small head of foam that is on the stubborn side as in it refuses to leave the scene. Big roasted malt, caramel and honey notes with a bit of vanilla in the smell. Tastes like it smells. Absolutely delicious with a rather mild alcohol presence. Bordering on full bodied, fairly light carbonation, I reckon that the Birch syrup is what makes it a different kettle of fish. More please.

Dark pour with big brown head. Heavy roasted coffee on the nose. Flavor is dark chocolate with almost reduced coffee and dried fruit. Great big finish.(Old notes)

Very dark brown color. Smokey, roasted malts with some honey notes in the nose. Roasted malt, but body is a bit too cloying with honey and lots of roasted malt. Pretty good, with nice smokey finish.

Beer is way too difficult to drink. Every flavor component is an odd sweetness and together they make for an unpleasant experience. Aroma of root beer, raisins, tons of wheat bread, and sourdough. Just crazy doughy and malty with lots of sweetness.

Autumn Brew Review, 2015. This beer was labeled as 2011. sweet, lots of malt, a hint of coffee. Heavy on the palate, some alcohol, and not much carbonation left. It was a good beer, but even while I was drinking it, I was surprised to hear it was an imperial stout.

Aroma and taste of a roasty, bourbony, smoky stout. Standard stouty mouthfeel. The bourbony taste may come from the syrup.
