Imperial Doppelbock Ale Aged On Oak Chips
Alaskan Troppelbock is a tawny, copper-colored ale with thick, ivory lacing. Toasty, biscuit, and caramel malt notes dominate the aroma but do not overwhelm the delicate undertones of freshly hewn oak and pecan pie-like nuttiness. The flavor is similarly complex; a huge, toasted malt profile melds with subtle fig, dark fruit, milk chocolate, and vanilla notes. The mouthfeel is warming, soft, and full, with moderately low carbonation and a slightly dry finish.

Malt syrup on the nose a touch of agave nectar. Palate is simple but adequate. A bit too sweet. Brown sugar syrup and oak vanillin. Not very balanced. ---That dog will hunt!

22 oz. bomber. It pours a dark reddish copper color with a small fizzy head. The aroma is rich with maltiness, cherry, fig, oak, caramel and a hint of molasses. The flavor is very oaky with an lightly medicinal alcohol burn. More malt, cherry and fig with spiced oak and alcohol in the finish. Thick, almost syrupy body. Decent flavors here, but a little rough.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 8/10/2013. Pours slightly hazy ruby red color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, fig, pear, caramel, molasses, toast, biscuit, brown bread, brown sugar, pepper, clove, oak, light vanilla, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice aromas with solid balance and complexity of malt, oak, and yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of big raisin, prune, fig, pear, caramel, molasses, toast, toffee, chocolate, brown bread, brown sugar, vanilla, oak, pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruits, caramel, molasses, toast, toffee, chocolate, brown bread, brown sugar, vanilla, oak, light pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark malt, oak, and yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/fruitiness balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and full bodied; with a very creamy, slick, and slightly syrupy mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice doppelbock style. All around good balance, complexity, and robustness of dark malt and fruity yeast ester flavors with moderate oak presence; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

Best by 10AUG13 Itís a hazel brown with a scattered etch tan top. Smells like bananas, cocoa powder, alcohol, brown sugar, some vanilla and maraschino cherry. Flavor is malty, some toasted sugar, a little cola, some oak and molasses. Medium bodied with limited carb and an off dry finish. Meh, but I actually suspect a year or two from now it would be decent.

A - Sweet maleness no aroma of hops. Slight hint of figs and a bit hot (Alcoholic) A - Nice amber in color which is very clear Some nice lacing that is tan to light cream in color. T - Sweet out the gate. Because of the lack of hops in the flavor, the malt comes through sting. The hot (Alcoholic) smell is not in the taste. Itís rated as 10.5% but doesnít taste like that at all. O - Iíd buy this beer again! Granted I could only have one or two in setting...but itís a fantastic beer that you should buy if you see it on the shelf!

Rich deep amber and toffee coloured body with a nice ruby glow and a thinnish, two centimetre tall tan head. Aroma of alcohol, toasted malt, pit fruits, caramel, toffee, figs and a lot of earth - very nice and strong. Full-bodied; Strong toasted malt flavours with tons of oak, peat, vanilla, bourbon and cognac tastes throughout. Aftertaste shows a lot of dry oak, some vanilla, a hint of earth and a good deal of pit fruits, but the oak and bourbon still leave the mouth dry. Overall, a pungent and super strong beer that shows well and has a good level of complexity. Great to sample and well worth bringing back home, even if it is some 5000 miles away! I sampled this 65 cL bottle purchased from Bottle Stop Liqour in Valdez, Alaska on 24-May-2013 for US$8.50 sampled at home back across this great land on 19-October-2013, in Washington.
