3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
Reviewed from notes
The appearance has an amber/brown body with a one finger off white/tan head that dies at a moderate pace to a film coating the top of the body. There is some clearness around the edges of the body.
The smell : holy candied fruits - mainly figs, but sweetly combined in a woody (perhaps a more oaky sense).
The taste is extremely sweet through candied fruits, sugary aftertaste, plain sweet yet somewhat dry finish.
The palate is about a medium, slightly sessionable (interesting as I’m reading the ABV is supposed to 10....hmmm?). Carbonation seems to be spot on.
Overall, this is a dessert beer of a doppelbock, interesting take on the style, pretty sure I’d have it again and hopefully a bit fresher next time as I’m unsure if the alcohol possibly died in this a bit as it really doesn’t feel anywhere close to 10%.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
A doppelbock with an edge—but not from hops, It’s rich & yummy with toffee, peaches, oak & alcohol (ala sherry). Aroma a layering of similar sweetness with toffee & plum, plus alcohol & woodsmoke. Not cloying or heavy in the mouth, sweet alcohol finish. Reddish amber clarity with modest tan head,

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Growler pour. Skiff of head disappears immediately, leaving beer the color of dark cider. Aromas of spice (rosewood), ripe sweet apple, plum, caramel. Flavors of ripe apple, oak, raisins, bourbon, faint bitter finish. A bit sweet over all, but this beer reminds me a lot of shiraz. Palate is smooth, tiny sharp bubbles a nice counterpoint to the viscosity. This beer is every bit as good as I remember it was from the bottle I didn’t rate. Wish they’d make this regularly, but it might be a one off.

3.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Joe Popeck and served in my Aventinus glass; Pours a beautiful mahogany turning to deep brown hue, oily tears. Heavy caramel and toast with an overtone of figgy pudding. Moderate oak and vanilla bean with a dash of pecan pie. Touch of smoke and ash towards the finish. This is quite sweet and is approved by the American Dental Association with it’s malty overload. This ultimately becomes pure Southern styled praline in liquid form, not for the faint of heart.

Malt syrup on the nose a touch of agave nectar. Palate is simple but adequate. A bit too sweet. Brown sugar syrup and oak vanillin. Not very balanced.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
22 oz. bomber. It pours a dark reddish copper color with a small fizzy head. The aroma is rich with maltiness, cherry, fig, oak, caramel and a hint of molasses. The flavor is very oaky with an lightly medicinal alcohol burn. More malt, cherry and fig with spiced oak and alcohol in the finish. Thick, almost syrupy body. Decent flavors here, but a little rough.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 8/10/2013. Pours slightly hazy ruby red color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with some moderate streaming carbonation. Aromas of big raisin, fig, pear, caramel, molasses, toast, biscuit, brown bread, brown sugar, pepper, clove, oak, light vanilla, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Nice aromas with solid balance and complexity of malt, oak, and yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of big raisin, prune, fig, pear, caramel, molasses, toast, toffee, chocolate, brown bread, brown sugar, vanilla, oak, pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of dark fruits, caramel, molasses, toast, toffee, chocolate, brown bread, brown sugar, vanilla, oak, light pepper, herbal, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Damn nice complexity, robustness, and balance of dark malt, oak, and yeast ester flavors; with a great malt/fruitiness balance and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Medium carbonation and full bodied; with a very creamy, slick, and slightly syrupy mouthfeel that is great. Alcohol is extremely well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice doppelbock style. All around good balance, complexity, and robustness of dark malt and fruity yeast ester flavors with moderate oak presence; and very smooth to sip on for the big ABV. A very enjoyable offering.

It’s a hazel brown with a scattered etch tan top. Smells like bananas, cocoa powder, alcohol, brown sugar, some vanilla and maraschino cherry. Flavor is malty, some toasted sugar, a little cola, some oak and molasses. Medium bodied with limited carb and an off dry finish. Meh, but I actually suspect a year or two from now it would be decent.
