Imperial Doppelbock Ale Aged On Oak Chips
Alaskan Troppelbock is a tawny, copper-colored ale with thick, ivory lacing. Toasty, biscuit, and caramel malt notes dominate the aroma but do not overwhelm the delicate undertones of freshly hewn oak and pecan pie-like nuttiness. The flavor is similarly complex; a huge, toasted malt profile melds with subtle fig, dark fruit, milk chocolate, and vanilla notes. The mouthfeel is warming, soft, and full, with moderately low carbonation and a slightly dry finish.

Copper/mahogany pour with an off-white head. Nose is sweet caramel, oak, vanilla, and cola. Some dark fruit, chocolate, and molasses. Sweet flavors of molasses, dark fruit, caramel, and vanilla. A heavy oak note, chocolate, cola, and light roast. Maybe a touch of nuts.

Bomber poured a clkear reddish amber with a small lingering amber head. Aromas of carmel, toffee, brown sugar, oak, banana, vanilla and light spice. Palate was medium to full bodied and smooth. Flavors of oak, toffee, brown sugar, vanilla and light fruittiness with a smooth lingering oak finish.

Sample at the Memorial Day Deck Beers tasting on 05/27/2013: Pours a clear dark mahogany color with a medium thick off-white head that diminishes slowly. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt, oak and plum. Full, syrupy body with flavors of earthy malt, figs and oak. The finish is rich and malty with a dark fruit aftertaste. Pretty good overall.

This one jsut didn’t work. I think the base doppelbock is a bit weak. It is sugary and boozy.

Bottle @ home, picked up at Wilbur’s Fort Collins. Pours a clear, rust orange appearance with a creamy, brown head. Hazelnutty, caramel, toffee, somewhat fruity, banana bread aroma. Soft carbonation. Slightly weird herbal/organic/woody, apple/banana, burnt black bread, caramel, toasty flavor with a bit of chocolate and vanilla. The oak kind of adds a strange flavor to the beer. Not sure I like its addition.

Toast biscuit and caramel do dominate, just as the descristion says. Pretty warming, medium bodied, a touch of dried fruit. Perhaps a tad too warming, but nice overall.

Bottle thanks to a trade! Pours a clear deep sappy amber with a gray head that dissipates nearly completely. Aroma has a nice sweet grain, biscuit and toffee note with a bit of fruits and some backing oak and vanilla notes. Flavor starts with biscuit and toffee and has more oak, roasted malts and vanilla in the finish with a touch of dark fruits.
