smoky roasted aroma, could really use more porter, as Las Vegas Clair exclaimed "That beer is so funky, I can still taste it" personally I just can’t stand sausagey beers

2002: Finally...I’ve waited a long time to try this. Dark, almost black with a brown head. Smells of smoke (duh). Great velvety, chewy, smoky mouthfeel. The flavor is not as smoky as I expected, but provides a nice backdrop to what is obviously a well made porter. Thanks to herbjones.

UPDATED: FEB 12, 2004 2001:Almost black with a frothy lacey, creamy head.Stays well above average till the end.Lightly roasty, smokey, chocolate, hop aromas.Smoke is subtle and in the background.Slightly vinous also.Palate seemed awfully watery at first, but for the subtelty of this beers flavor, quickly turned, perfectly velvety.Malts and subtle hop are followed by such a subtle smokiness with a rich, oily, sweet finish.Hops seem to come out in the finish as well about half way down.So sublime.I really like it that it was a pint bottle.I was expecting a 12oz.The best smoked porter I have had,so far.

UPDATED: FEB 22, 2003 2002 a black beauty with a thin layer of tan lacing..aroma was of roasted malts, cola like tipping subtly smokey..smokiness comes out strong in the flavor riding a semi-full bodied wave of roasty notes..strong smokey aftertaste..meaty, like beef jerky..there's also fruitiness in the background hinting at peaches & raspberries..its just missing that special kick..could use some more hop bitterness
4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 17/20 mwsf (360) - San Francisco, California, USA - NOV 13, 2002
2001: Dark brown to black. Opaque. Large tan head. Smoky aroma with some malt. Bread, yeast, and some hops in the nose. Wonderfully balanced flavor of smoky malt, firm bitterness, mild roast, and faint chocolate. Very creamy and full-bodied. If it has a flaw, it’s too much smoke. Tastes like the smoking room at the Big O Fish House smells and that’s not a bad thing. A damn fine beer.

This was great. 2002 or 01 bottle. Very smokey strong scent. Somewhat sweet, but balanced well with the dark burnt taste. Can’t wait for the vertical tasting in a few weeks. That’ll be a rerate.

Rating #2 of the 2002 vintage with 6.1% abv (8 4 8 4 17). Dark brown to black color with a dark brown head. A dark roasted aroma with chocolate and a light smoke tint throughout the nose that grows more intense as the beer warms. A full bodied beer with plenty of chocolate and rich malt flavor and an enjoyable lingering smoke.

GABF 2002: I’ve waited a long time to try this beer. Very dark black but showing alot of red at the edges. Rich chocolatey and malty aroma. Plenty of campfire smoke in the nose. Very well balanced dark malt flavors with medium smokiness. Smooth. Outstanding.
