4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
rich and intensely flavored" is right...for better or worse. Most people love or hate this beer. the smokiness is anything but subtle. A good dose in the nose. While in the mouth, the big full bodied porter qualities get to come out and play, but the finish is almost all smoke...and is there a hint of fishiness in that finish? recommended. definitely unique. stones is a touch thinner, but easier to drink. i like this beer (my wife hates it) but i donít think iíd want to polish off a 22 by myself."

Bottles from Rehills, Newcastle and Safeway, Heaton, Newcastle (now closed). 2012 Vintage aged for 2 years before drinking. This inky black beer pours with a thin tan head. It has a slight sour red fruity flavour, liquorice and salty brine notes followed by a gentle smoked finish. Superb!

2012 vintage bottle from the Trembling Madness in York. Pours black with a thin tan head. Starts rich and meaty with a fair amount of spiciness. Peaty smoke on the finish. Very good quite intense beer there are chocolate notes and a little coffee too. Slight band aid finish.

5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
Had a bunch of times and it does differ, vintage to vintage. But it is always really good. Never a distracting problem always great smoke aroma and roasty charcter, and always perfect head and carbonation. A++++ brew

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
On tap at Apex. 2012 vintage.
A: Deep black, cappuccino head, good lacing.
N: Band-aids, campfire ashes, some cocoa, bacon fat, and a hint of lactose.
T: Big smoke, good sweetness.
M: Medium-heavy body. A touch creamy.
O: After the Baltique, this one is appreciably less rich. The smoke elements are still there, but it does fall short in comparison. At the same time, this is a venerable beer and itís still worth your time, especially aged.
